Sports Update For Indiana Wednesday September 1, 2010 | Baseball MLB: San Francisco 5, Colorado 2 SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Andres Torres homered to highlight a three-run eighth inning Tuesday and the San Francisco Giants beat Colorado 5-2. The win, coupled with a San Diego loss to Arizona, allowed the Giants to pull to within four games of the first-place Padres in the National League West. Torres' home run broke a 2-2 tie and Buster Posey drove in two more runs with a double in the eighth. Jeremy Affeldt (4-3) got the win in relief of Madison Bumgarner. Brian Wilson picked up his 37th save of the season. Melvin Mora had a game-tying solo home run in the top of the eighth off of Affeldt. Clint Barnes drove in the only other run for the Rockies, who had won seven of eight coming into Tuesday's contest. Matt Belisle (6-5) took the loss in relief of Esmil Rogers. San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Rogers balked, sending Freddy Sanchez home from third. Colorado tied the score in the second but the Giants went ahead 2-1 in the fifth on Bumgarner's RBI double. BYU's Mountain West resignation becomes effective June 30 when the school joins the West Coast Conference in every sport except football. BYU became a founding member of the MWC in 1998 after many years with the Western Athletic Conference. The Cougars were facing a Wednesday deadline to inform the MWC of their intentions. The switch comes during a summer of college conference realignments that included Nebraska leaving the Big 12 to join the Big 10. The Mountain West Conference and Western Athletic Conference have also seen shifts, with WAC powerhouse Boise State announcing its intention to bolt for the MWC starting next year. BYU joins Notre Dame, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy as major independent football programs. (UPI) -- Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin must spend a month in jail on a drunk driving conviction, an Arizona judge ruled Tuesday. Scottsdale, Ariz., City Court Judge B. Monte Morgan imposed the sentence after the Russian netminder was convicted Friday of driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding, the Edmonton Journal reported. The newspaper said Khabibulin's attorney has already filed an appeal so the start of the goalie's sentence has been delayed, three weeks before the Oilers open their 2010-11 season training camp. Khabibulin was found guilty of driving with a blood alcohol count of .08 or more, excessive speeding and extreme driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol content of .15 or more, the Journal said. Police reported they stopped Khabibulin on Feb. 8 near his Paradise Valley, Ariz., home, where they allegedly clocked him driving at 70 mph in a 45-mph zone. The 14th-seeded Sharapova rallied to beat the Australian 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 on a day when the Los Angeles Times said temperatures on the court climbed as high as 110 degrees. Sharapova used hard, deep groundstrokes to wear down Groth, who is ranked 60th in the world. "She came out firing and didn't give me many opportunities," Sharapova said. "I'm glad I hung in, fought and gave myself a chance to get better." Earlier in the Tuesday women's bracket, fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic survived 48 unforced errors and outlasted Romanian Simona Halep 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. The former world No. 1 took 2 hours, 20 minutes to down the 18-year-old Halep in the stifling late-summer heat. Former U.S. Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, the 11th seed, defeated 39-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Eighth-seeded Li Na of China was upset by Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
