Baseball

MLB: Los Angeles Dodgers 7, Colorado 5

DENVER (UPI) -- Matt Kemp smashed a grand slam and James Loney knocked in a pair runs Wednesday in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 7-5 victory over Colorado.

Loney tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk off Jhoulys Chacin (9-11), and Kemp followed by blasting a pitch into right field stands to give the Dodgers the lead for good.

Loney drove in what turned out to be the decisive run with a fifth-inning RBI single, boosting Los Angeles to a three-game sweep of the Rockies at Coors Field.

Ramon Troncoso (2-3) picked up the victory with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Carlos Monasterios. Ronald Belisario earned his second save despite giving up a run and loading the bases in the ninth.

Troy Tulowitzki went 4-for-4 and scored four runs and Ryan Spilborghs collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs for Colorado, which dropped its ninth game in 10 contests.

The losing skid crushed their hopes of gaining a National League playoff berth. The Rockies were officially eliminated with Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers.

Warriors keeping Curry

OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI) -- The Golden State Warriors have exercised their third-year contract option on promising shooting guard Stephen Curry for the 2011-12 season.

The 6-foot-3 Curry was second in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting last season when he averaged 17.5 points, 5.9 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 80 games. He also ranked third in the league in steals (152) and eighth in 3-point percentage (.437).

The seventh overall pick in the 2009 draft shot 41.2 percent from 3-point range and 87.6 percent from the free-throw line during his three years at Davidson.

Football

Ravens' Boldin earns AFC offensive award

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Baltimore wide receiver Anquan Boldin was given the AFC offensive player of the week award Wednesday for his three-touchdown effort last weekend.

Kansas City linebacker Tamba Hali earned the defensive award and Buffalo kick returner C.J. Spiller the special teams award.

Boldin's TD catches were among eight receptions he had for 142 yards in the Ravens' 24-17 victory over Cleveland. During the game, he became the quickest player in NFL history to reach the 600-reception plateau (98 games). It is the first time he's won the weekly honor.

Hali recorded three sacks and forced a fumble in the Chiefs' 31-10 win over San Francisco. It's also his first time winning the weekly award.

Spiller set a Buffalo rookie record with 189 kickoff return yards, including a 95-yard TD run, in a 38-30 loss to New England. He also caught a 5-yard touchdown pass.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (UPI) -- Buffalo Bills outside linebacker Chris Kelsay has signed a four-year contract extension, the NFL club said Wednesday.

The Bills didn't say how much they will pay Kelsay, who has 19 tackles in the first three games this season.

The 30-year-old linebacker was a second-round pick in the 2003 draft out of Nebraska. As a pro, he has 332 tackles, 22 sacks and three interceptions while starting 90 of his 113 career games.

Beckham unsure of loan to Europe this year

CARSON, Calif. (UPI) -- David Beckham, recently returned to MLS play from an Achilles tendon injury, said he doesn't expect to be loaned this season to a European soccer team.

Beckham, 35, played the last two seasons for AC Milan as he tried to work his way back onto the English national team. However, a torn Achilles tendon in March ended his hopes of playing in the 2010 World Cup.

He returned to the lineup of the MLS Los Angeles Galaxy, making two appearances as a substitute before playing an entire game last Friday.

He told fifa.com that he was focusing on "getting my full fitness back."

Asked if he would return to Europe to play this season he said, "I don't think so."

"Physically I need to get myself back in order after a very long time out of the game. I can't say for sure but I guess we'll just have to wait and see," he said.

Melzer sails into Thailand Open quarters

BANGKOK (UPI) -- Third-seeded Jurgen Melzer was among second-round winners Wednesday at the Thailand Open tennis tournament.

Melzer advanced to the tournament quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dudi Sela. He was able to convert five of 11 break-point chances. Melzer dropped his own serve three times but lost only nine points on serve in the second set.

No. 4-seeded Ernests Gulbis also moved into the quarterfinals, defeating Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 in a match in which both players won 114 points and that took nearly 3 hours to decide.

Gulbis will go against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the next round. Garcia-Lopez had nearly as long a match as Gulbis, finally escaping Florent Serra 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5.

Daniel Brands pulled off a second-round upset by taking two tie-breakers in beating No. 6-seed Thiemo de Bakker 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 7-6 (9-7).

Also Wednesday, Benjamin Becker ousted Mischa Zverev 6-1, 6-4 in the tournament's final first-round match.
