SEPTEMBER UPDATES ADD SECURITY TO WINDOWS EMBEDDED OSES
Microsoft announced September 2010 feature and security updates for its Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and Windows XP Embedded operating systems. Now available, the updates stamp out eight vulnerabilities that could permit remote code execution, and also include a re-release of fixes that were released last month, the company says.

SPRINT TO SELL MOTOROLA'S RUGGED WINDOWS HANDHELD
Sprint announced what it says is the first Motorola enterprise handheld to be branded and sold by a wireless carrier. The ES400S runs the Windows Embedded Handheld operating system, offers both CDMA/EVDO and HSPA/GSM radios, and has a 3.2 megapixel camera that doubles as a 1D/2D barcode scanner, the company says.

QSEVEN MODULE SPORTS ATOM E6XXT PROCESSORS, 4GB SSD
Portwell announced a Qseven module sporting the wide-temperature variants of Intel's recently announced Atom E6xx processors, with an operating range of -40 to 185 deg. F (-40 to 85 deg. C.). The PQ7-M105IT features an onboard 4GB or 8GB SSD (solid state disk) up to 8GB, eight USB 2.0 ports and four PCI Express x1 lanes, and is offered with an available 3.5-inch carrier board, the company says.

MODULAR HANDHELD SURVIVES SIX-FOOT DROPS
Psion announced a modular, Windows CE-based handheld computer and an "open online community" dedicated to creation of accessories for it. The ultra-rugged Omnii XT10 includes a 600MHz TI (Texas Instruments) OMAP3 processor, a 3.7-inch VGA display, choice of three different keyboards, and a variety of scanning and connectivity options, the company says.

WINDOWS CE-READY SoC SIPS HALF A WATT
Freescale Semiconductor announced a Windows CE-ready, ARM9-based i.MX28x SoC, targeting fanless industrial applications as well as automotive systems. The i.MX28x consumes less than half a Watt, supports extended temperatures, offers clock-synchronized Ethernet, and in one model, includes a Layer 2 switch for low-cost daisy-chaining of devices.

MIPS TOUTS ITS QUAD-CORE IP AS AN ATOM-BEATER
Sunnyvale-based MIPS Technologies announced processor IP that will bring multiple cores to products such as digital TVs, STBs (set-top boxes), and Blu-ray players. Said to already have a "yet-to-be-announced lead licensee," the MIPS32 1074K CPS (coherent processing system) provides up to four cores, a CM (coherence management) unit, a CPC (cluster power controller), and optional FPUs (floating point units), the company says.

PICO PROJECTOR HAS TOUCHSCREEN, MICROSOFT OFFICE SUPPORT
3M announced a pico projector that can display Po werPoint presentations and other Microsoft Office documents without being connected to a computer. The MP180 has a touchscreen display, WiFi, Bluetooth, and 4GB of storage, the company says.

REVAMPED ULTRA-MOBILE PC RUNS WINDOWS 7, MOBILE, CE
While other vendors chase the tablet market, Panasonic is making updates to what was the world's first Intel Atom-powered UMPC (ultra-mobile PC). The ruggedized Toughbook U1 Ultra has gained a faster 1.6GHz CPU, an improved TransFlective Plus screen, a 64GB SSD (solid state disk), and Windows 7, plus the ability to run Windows CE or Windows Mobile via third-party software.

TRI-CORE, 1.5GHZ ARM SOC TOUTED FOR 1080P 3D VIDEO
Marvell announced a 1.5GHz, tri-core member of its Armada system-on-chip family. Aimed at smartphones and tablets, the Armada 628 combines two 1.5GHz ARM v7 cores with a specialized 624MHz system management core that reduces power consumption, adding six media processing engines that are claimed to deliver dual 1080p streams of 3D video plus "advanced 3D gaming performance."

WINNERS PICKED IN EMBEDDEDSPARK 2010 SUMMER CHALLENGE
Microsoft's embeddedSPARK 2010 Summer Challenge has been won by South Africa's Rudie Shepherd, with a "RoomBox" device that fills a teenager's room with projected touchscreens. The contest, which concluded at last week's Embedded Systems Conference in Boston, asked "Internet technology enthusiasts" to use Windows Embedded Standard 7 in a device addressing the theme "Media Explosion."

NVIDIA PORTING CUDA TO X86
Nvidia announced that it will port its CUDA (compute unified device architecture) programming language directly to x86 chips. The chipmaker is also touting its next GPU (graphics processing unit), "Kepler," which will be three or four times more powerful than the current Fermi product, according to industry reports.
