Virgin Blue suspends electronic check-in

SYDNEY (UPI) -- Low-cost Australian airline Virgin Blue has suspended its Internet and kiosk check-in services as it struggles to fix its computer problems.

The Web check-in, kiosk check-in and Check-mate systems will not be functioning from 8 p.m. Tuesday until the start of the business day Thursday.

During this time, the airline said check-in for domestic flights will open 2 hours before scheduled departure time and 3 hours for international journeys, the airline said on...

Aussie firm facing banknote probe

CANBERRA, Australia (UPI) -- A firm half owned by the Reserve Bank of Australia, Securency, has been accused of improperly producing partially made foreign banknotes.

The Australian Federal Police are investigating the claims by three former staff members that the RBA company produced banknote substrate, a plastic material used by the firm, to make the banknotes of Nigeria, Vietnam, and a third unnamed country without orders from their central banks, The Age newspaper in Melbourne ...

Verizon Wireless to pay out millions

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. (UPI) -- Verizon Wireless said Sunday it will pay out tens of millions of dollars to 15 million cellphone customers the U.S. communications company overcharged.

Verizon, based in Basking Ridge, N.J., said it would apply credits to current customers and mail refund checks to former customers this month and next for "mistaken past data charges" because "we always want to do the right thing for our customers."

Sikorsky cutting workforce on weak sales

STRATFORD, Conn. (UPI) -- Sikorsky Aircraft is cutting about 200 jobs, blaming weakness in the commercial helicopter market.

The company, a division of United Technologies Corp., announced Friday it will eliminate about 1 percent of its global workforce, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported.

The cuts affect salaried positions only. Sikorsky, which has its headquarters in Stratford, Conn., and operations worldwide, would not specify where the cuts were being made.
