U.S. cargo scrutiny up after bombs found

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Security screening of cargo and air passengers in the United States was high Saturday after bombs were found on two Chicago-bound planes.

Heightened security scanning was also stepped up in Canada and Britain after the discovery late Thursday and early Friday of two bombs originating in Yemen.

Senator calls Calif's pot measure bad idea

GLENDALE, Calif. (UPI) -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., says her state's ballot initiative legalizing marijuana would be a bad example for children.

Feinstein, co-chair of the organization opposing Proposition 19, said at an appearance in Glendale Friday that passage of the measure Tuesday would tell children there is nothing wrong with smoking pot.

Rainy SoCal gets early morning soaking

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The National Weather Service posted flood advisories in the Los Angeles area early Saturday as a line of heavy rain moved south along the coast.

Rain moved into San Diego County during the morning hours after drenching rains slowed down the light weekend traffic on many of the Los Angeles area's highways.

Chinese premier wants regional Asian ties

HANOI, Vietnam (UPI) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao says China, Japan and the Republic of Korea are an important part of East Asian cooperation, and should work to strengthen ties.

Wen spoke at a meeting of leaders of the three countries in Hanoi and said the ASEAN summit meeting in Vietnam should attach strategic importance to their alliance, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
