British PM defends military spending

LONDON (UPI) -- British Prime Minister David Cameron said despite bickering over defense spending cuts, British troops will have "everything that they need" in Afghanistan.

The Conservative leader told The Sunday Telegraph the previous Labor government left him with a "complete car crash" of a defense budget that was $60 billion over budget.

U.S. issues travel alert for Europe

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert for Americans visiting Europe Sunday after evidence surfaced that al-Qaida might be planning an attack.

The alert told Americans to be on their toes while in Europe because public transportation and tourist attractions could be potential targets

British soldier killed in Afghanistan

HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan (UPI) -- An explosion in Afghanistan's Helmand Province has killed a British soldier, officials said.

He is the 339th Briton to die in Afghanistan since 2001, a spokesman for Task Force Helmand said in a Sunday Telegraph report.

"It is with a deep sense of regret that I must confirm the death of a soldier from the 1st Battalion, the Royal Gurkha Rifles yesterday afternoon," said Lt. Col. David Eastman.
