Hearing loss can spell trouble at home

LONDON (UPI) -- Hearing loss can strain marriage as well as communication, a survey released in Britain Saturday found.

A third of respondents to the study carried out by HearingDirect.com said their increasing difficulty hearing had led to domestic arguments, The Daily Telegraph reported. More than 1,000 people over 40 with deafness were questioned.

HearingDirect makes hearing aids and similar devices.

The hard-of-hearing partner often feels that their spouse does not understand how they suffer, the poll found.

But the deaf person's reluctance to recognize their problem and deal with it is also a major source of stress.

One in 16 said their partner had threatened to leave unless they got their hearing sorted out.

The survey found that one in five of the 9 million Britons estimated to have some degree of hearing loss had lied about it to friends and family. Two-thirds also admitted faking their way through conversations, while half said they had become depressed and isolated.

Good night's sleep key to long life

SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- The secret to a long life may be getting a good night's sleep -- less than 5 hours a night is not enough, but 8 hours may be too much, U.S. researchers say.

Study leader Dr. Daniel F. Kripke, a professor emeritus of psychiatry at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, revisited original research conducted from 1995 to 1999 as part of the Women's Health Initiative. Kripke and colleagues had tracked 459 women ages 50-81 living in San Diego to determine whether sleep duration could be associated with mortality. Fourteen years later, they checked on who was still alive.

Of the original participants, 444 were located and evaluated, while 86 women had died.

"The surprise was that when sleep was measured objectively, the best survival was observed among women who slept 5-6.5 hours," Kripke says in a statement. "Women who slept less than 5 hours a night or more than 6.5 hours were less likely to be alive at the 14-year follow-up."

This means that women who sleep as little as 5 to 6.5 hours -- the average measured sleep duration for San Diego women -- have nothing to worry about, since that amount of sleep is evidently consistent with excellent survival, Kripke says.

The findings are published online in the journal Sleep Medicine.

TV viewing may be hazardous to health

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (UPI) -- Watching too many medical dramas and too much medical news on television may reduce one's satisfaction in life, U.S. researchers say.

Yinjiao Ye, assistant professor of communications studies at the University of Rhode Island, say millions watch medical shows such as "Grey's Anatomy," "House" and "ER," and evidence shows this type of medical programming disseminates health knowledge and changes health attitudes.

The researchers surveyed 274 students in the College of Communications at the University of Alabama about their TV viewing and life satisfaction, but they were not told the purpose of the survey.

The study, published in the journal Mass Communication and Society, finds viewing medical content on TV leads viewers to believe they have a greater likelihood of being victimized by bad risks and that the risks are severe.

Previous research has shown TV viewing can cause people to be less satisfied with their lives because it makes them more materialistic -- overestimating the value of other people's possessions compared to their own, Ye says. The current findings suggest the perception that getting sick and not being able to do much about it can be added as a second cause of life dissatisfaction, Ye says.

Children's food full of empty calories

BETHESDA, Md. (UPI) -- U.S. researchers say the flow of empty calories into children's food needs to be reduced.

Researchers Jill Reedy and Susan Krebs-Smith of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Md., examined the diets of children and teens ages 2-18 and found the main sources of calories were grain desserts, pizza and soda.

The researchers also find sugar-sweetened beverages such as soda and fruit drinks provided almost 10 percent of total calories consumed. Nearly 40 percent of total calories consumed were in the form of empty calories from solid fat and from added sugars.

Half of empty calories came from six foods -- soda, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, grain desserts, pizza and whole milk.

"This paper identifies the major sources of overall energy and empty calories, providing context for dietary guidance that could specifically focus on limiting calories from these sources and for changes in the food environment," the researchers say in a statement. "Product reformulation alone is not sufficient."

The article is published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
