Celeste Byers
Artful insanity from a chick
Twisted art made by a girl can be extra exhilarating, like how you felt on first viewing the vid for "I Wanna Rock"... at least until the blonde turned around and you could totally make out his Dee. For delightful darkness from a real young, real lady, check out the artwork of Celeste Byers.
21 year old, OB-born Byers employs various media (though usually uses gouache: watercolor w/ a higher pigment-to-H2O ratio) to work up crazy, oft-sexually suggestive artwork influenced by her penchant for finding "humor in sexuality", which is weird, because she hasn't even had sex with you yet. Weirdness includes her "Plants with Diseases" collection (which combines her interest in "looking at skin lesions, and plants"...), like "Carrots with Organs" featuring transparent roots seemingly infected with parasites, "Papayas with Scurvy" depicting sliced fruit showing the telltale spotty skin and gums, and a piece showing six bare trees profusely vomiting leaves (presumably they're sycamores). Other warped highlights include "Poor Traits", drawn from distorted shake-face pictures of her family, an inside view of her Toyota Sienna as bread (sketched on a trippy camping trip), and a series inspired by her trip to the Playboy Mansion, including the descriptively titled "Fake Boobs Don't Move When You Jump", despite the fact that they clearly run away when you jump at them.
The pièce de ré-twist-ance is a suggestively/cleverly named pictorial rundown of various national trees with their canopies redrawn to look like female genitalia, because unlike some, she's got nothing to Snide.
