COL FB: Virginia 24, Miami (Fla.) 19

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (UPI) -- Virginia forced five Miami turnovers and shut out the 22nd-ranked Hurricanes for the first three quarters of their 24-19 victory Saturday.

Corey Mosley and Chase Minnifield each had two interceptions and Rodney McLeod picked off a fifth pass to help derail the Hurricanes (5-3, 3-2 ACC), who had 448 total yards of offense to 361 for Virginia (4-4, 1-3).

The loss ended Miami's three-game road winning streak.

Miami quarterback Jacory Harris completed 7-of-13 passes for 81 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter after a particularly hard tackle. Freshman Stephen Morris came in to throw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and run in another score from 9 yards out after the Cavaliers had built up a 24-0 lead.

Keith Payne ran for 81 yards and two Virginia touchdowns. Marc Verica was 19-of-27 for 176 yards and one TD.

McDowell, Maybin share Andalucia lead

SOTOGRANDE, Spain (UPI) -- Graeme McDowell blew a lead with a double-bogey on the 18th hole Saturday, falling into a tie with Gareth Maybin after three rounds of the Andalucia Masters.

The late fumble gave McDowell, who held the lead after 36 holes, a round of 1-over 72. He ended the day tied with Maybin (70) at 6-under 207 at Club de Golf Valderrama.

Saturday's finish sets up a final-round showdown between McDowell and Maybin. McDowell, winner of this year's U.S. Open, will be seeking his seventh European Tour victory of the year, while Maybin will be going for this first tour victory.

The pair held a four-shot lead over Irishman Damien McGrane (70) and Miguel Angel Jimenez (71), who were knotted in third place at minus-2.

Sergio Garcia (69) and Thomas Bjorn (71) were one shot further back at 1-under 212.

NASCAR VP Jim Hunter dies at 71

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UPI) -- NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter has died at age 71, racing circuit officials said Saturday.

Hunter, who had been battling cancer for a year, was one of auto racing's giants, said NASCAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brian France.

"For more than 40 years, Jim was part of NASCAR and its history. He loved the sport, but loved the people even more," France said. "It seems as if everyone in the sport called him a friend. Jim will forever be missed by the NASCAR community. Our sympathies go out to his entire family."

Hunter, the one-time sports editor of the Columbia (S.C.) Record and a writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, became a columnist for Stock Car Racing magazine and crossed into public relations in the 1960s.

He became public relations director at Darlington Raceway and Talladega Superspeedway, remaining an executive there until accepting an offer from NASCAR in 2001 to lead an expanded public relations effort in response to increased media coverage of the sport nationwide.

Youzhny, Kukushkin to vie in Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (UPI) -- Russian Mikhail Youzhny and Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin will square off for the St. Petersburg Open title after both won semifinals matches Saturday.

No. 1 seed Youzhny played a tense third-set tiebreaker, saving four match points before downing fellow Russian Dmitry Tursunov, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8). Youzhny got hot late in the tiebreaker, storming back from a 6-3 deficit to deny Tursunov.

He eventually prevailed in a match that lasted just over three hours.

In the day's other semifinal, Kukushkin emerged with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Ukraine's Ilya Marchenko in a relatively easy affair that lasted just 95 minutes. Kukushkin broke serve for a 5-4 lead in the second set to reach his first career WTP finals.

Youzhny, who won the St. Petersburg event in 2004, beat Kukushkin in their lone previous meeting, a 6-2, 6-1 rout in the 2009 Moscow semifinals.
