Sports Update For Indiana Thursday October 28, 2010 Baseball Basketball Sports Calendar Golf Hockey Baseball MLB: San Francisco 11, Texas 7 SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Juan Uribe's three-run homer highlighted a six-run fifth inning Wednesday that sent San Francisco to an 11-7 win over Texas in the World Series opener. Texas starter Cliff Lee had won all seven of his career playoff decisions, but in the first World Series game in franchise history he was blasted by the Giants. San Francisco produced six runs on eight hits against Lee in 4 2/3 innings and the Giants eventually pounded out 14 hits in a ragged start to baseball's showcase event. There were six errors in the game, four committed by the Rangers, although only one run was unearned. The second game of the best-of-seven series will be played Thursday in San Francisco. Forecasters have called for a 70 percent chance of rain in the area. San Francisco overcame an early 2-0 deficit to tie it in the third and the game was still deadlocked as the Giants came to the plate in the sixth. Andres Torres got the inning going with a one-out double and he scored the go-ahead run on another double by Freddy Sanchez, who became the first player in World Series history to double in his first three at-bats and who wound up with four of them for the game. Buster Posey struck out, leaving the Rangers just one out away from getting out of the inning, but Lee walked Pat Burrell and gave up an RBI single to Cody Ross. Aubrey Huff delivered another run-scoring single, driving Lee from the mound. Darren O'Day came on and immediately gave up the three-run homer to Uribe, who entered the game batting .214 in the playoffs. San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum got the win, although he was less than sensational. Lincecum, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3. San Francisco extended its lead to 11-4 with a three-run eighth and then gave up three runs in the ninth, forcing an appearance by closer Brian Wilson. The Clippers had a 79-78 lead when Miller hit the shot that put the Trail Blazers in front for good. Los Angeles went scoreless for 4 minutes while Portland was putting the game away. All five Portland starters scored in double figures, led by Brandon Roy with 22 points. LaMarcus Aldridge had 17 points, Nicolas Batum had 15 and Miller finished with 14. The Clippers rallied from as much as a seven-point deficit in the third period to take their brief lead early in the fourth. Eric Gordon paced the Clippers with 22 points and Blake Griffin had 20 in his long-awaited first NBA game. Griffin missed all the 2009-10 season due to injury after being the first player selected in the 2009 draft. Barnes had four birdies in his first six holes in grabbing the lead. He has a 1-stroke lead over Ryan Moore, whose 7-under 64 was also bogey-free. Brian Davis, Carl Pettersson and Charlie Wi are tied for third at 6-under. Four more golfers are at 5-under. Barnes opened with two pars but then birdied Nos. 3 and 4. After a par at the fifth hole, he had back back-to-back birdies at 6 and 7. On the second nine, Barnes had birdies on each of the four odd-numbered holes. All of Moore's seven birdies came after the fifth hole. He also birdied Nos. 6 and 7 and got to 4-under with birdies a 9 and 10. Also like Barnes, Moore had birdies at 13, 15 and 17. The event, which has a 40-player field, is the first PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament in Southeast Asia. It carries a purse of $6 million with $1.08 million going to the winner Sunday. However, money won at the tournament won't be counted toward the player's PGA Tour total nor will the eventual champion be credited with an official win. Copyright 2010 by United Press International Hockey Ex-hockey coach faces new sex charges WINNIPEG, Manitoba (UPI) -- Former Canadian junior hockey coach Graham James turned himself in to authorities Wednesday to face new sexual assault allegations, Winnipeg police said. CTV reported police officers met James in Toronto and escorted him back to Winnipeg, where he was arrested. James had been the subject of an arrest warrant issued in mid-October stemming from an ongoing investigation into "complaints of historic sexual assaults," CTV said. The 58-year-old ex-coach had pleaded guilty in the 1990s to sexually assaulting former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy and served a three-year prison term. While he was later granted a pardon, last year another former NHL player, Theo Fleury, published an autobiography in which he accused James of assaulting him.
