Canadian wages up for second month

OTTAWA (UPI) -- Canadians' average weekly earnings in September rose 4.3 percent on an annual basis, the second consecutive monthly rise, Statistics Canada said Thursday.

The average weekly wage for non-farm employees was $864.13, partly due to a .09 percent increase in the number of hours worked on annual basis, the agency said.

Facebook tightens grip on word 'face'

PALO ALTO, Calif. (UPI) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has taken a step toward granting Internet giant Facebook a trademark on the name "face."

The trademark agency did not give final approval to Facebook, but issued a Notice of Allowance, one step away from giving Facebook a corner on the market that has already had a few legal scuffles regarding its name, InformationWeek reported Wednesday.

U.S. markets regain Tuesday's losses

NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. markets turned higher Wednesday, regaining Tuesday's losses despite a drop in factory orders in Europe and the United States.

Eurostat said industrial orders fell 3.8 percent in the euro zone in September compared to August and dropped 2.5 percent in the 27-member European Union. In Washington, the Commerce Department said new orders for durable goods fell 3.3 percent in October after a 5 percent increase in September.

Strike in Portugal pivots on budget cuts

LISBON, Portugal (UPI) -- A general strike in Portugal in protest of austerity budget cuts brought unity to the cause, a union leader said Wednesday.

"I've never seen so many people support and identify so closely with the causes of a strike before," The Financial Times quoted Manuel Carvalho da Silva, general-secretary of the CGTP-Intersindical trade union, as saying.
