David Nolan, Libertarian co-founder, dies

TUCSON (UPI) -- David Nolan, a founder of the Libertarian Party, has died at age 66, a party official said.

Nolan apparently was stricken suddenly Saturday night while driving in Tucson, Ariz., and was taken to a hospital, where he died Sunday, party Chairman Mark Hinkle told the Los Angeles Times. The cause of death has not been determined.

Russian military to downsize by 2016

MOSCOW (UPI) -- The Russian military will be downsized to under 1 million personnel by 2016 when reservists will be placed on contract, military officials said.

"We are drafting a new system of recruiting reservists, which will allow conscripted servicemen to sign a reservist contract after the end of their conscription term," Vasily Smirnov, deputy chief of the general staff, said in a report from RIA Novosti.

Premier sues Mugabe over Zimbabwe posts

HARARE, Zimbabwe (UPI) -- Zimbabwe's power-sharing deal got a little more fragile Friday with Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai suing President Robert Mugabe over appointments.

Tsvangirai's motion in the High Court seeks to overturn Mugabe's naming of provincial governors without his consent, The Wall Street Journal reported. The prime minister said that move violated the governing agreement.

Pakistan foils mosque suicide bomb attempt

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (UPI) -- Attempted suicide assaults on a mosque and government buildings in Islamabad were thwarted Friday, Pakistan said.

One of the two men captured was wearing a bomb vest and was on his way to bomb a mosque during Friday prayers, Interior Minister Rehman Malik told state-run Pakistan Television. The other target was the Parliament and nearby offices.
