Priest abuse victims rally near Vatican

ROME (UPI) -- Victims of sexual abuse by priests called on the Catholic Church to punish those who cover up the abuse and to do more to protect the children.

Hundreds of survivors of child sex abuse, some carrying signs reading "Justice," "Shame" and "Hands Off Children," demonstrated near the Vatican Sunday after being told they wouldn't be allowed in St. Peter's Square, Voice of America reported.

Somali-American picked as prime minister

MOGADISHU, Somalia (UPI) -- A Somali-American was elected prime minister of Somalia, officials said.

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, a former official at the Somali Embassy in Washington, will take over the Western-backed transitional government, The New York Times reported.

Mohamed won a vote of confidence Sunday from Somalia's Parliament, which named him prime minister by a vote of 297 to 92.

Israel on alert for package bombs

JERUSALEM (UPI) -- Israel's transport minister said Jerusalem received warnings of plans to send bombs to synagogues in the United States a day before they were discovered.

"Since Thursday, Israeli representatives have been on location in sensitive airports around the world, securing shipments to Israel," Yisrael Katz told Ynetnews.com Monday.

Officials set Indonesia death toll at 488

JAKARTA (UPI) -- An erupting volcano, earthquake and tsunami last week in Indonesia killed 488 people and forced the evacuation of more than 85,000, officials said Monday.

Government information indicates that Mount Merapi volcanic eruptions in Yogyakarta province in central Java since Tuesday killed at least 38 people, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
