Toys out unless veggies in a kid's meal

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- San Francisco supervisors overrode a mayoral veto of legislation barring fast-food restaurants from packing toys in meals unless dietary criteria are met.

The Board of Supervisors' vote was expected and the restrictions -- opposed by McDonald's, the California Restaurant Association and other fast-food industry representatives -- take effect in December 2011, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.

One killed in violent Cairo protest

CAIRO (UPI) -- A male demonstrator was killed in violent clashes between Egyptian police and hundreds of Orthodox Coptic Christian protesters in Cairo, officials said.

Violence erupted Wednesday following a decision to stop construction of a new church in the Giza area, al-Masry-al-Youm said.

FBI investigating threats to researchers

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The FBI and police in Los Angeles are investigating a package of razor blades and a threatening note sent to a neuroscientist at UCLA, the university reported.

Animal rights militants claim on several Web sites they sent the threatening packages to Professor David Jentsch and a graduate student who works in his laboratory, UCLA said.

Jentsch, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science, utilizes ververt monkeys in his behavioral research.

Dismissed lesbian major to be reinstated

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A major dismissed under the "don't ask, don't tell" law barring openly gay people from U.S. military service will be reinstated, a civil liberties group said.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which represented U.S. Air Force Maj. Margaret Witt in her four-year battle, announced her reinstatement Tuesday, CNN reported.
