Happy Thanksgiving 2010

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 01:30 AM PST

Cheesy and not internationally useful, but hey. It’s what we do. Here’s a quick video that I shot to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving or a Happy Thursday (depending on where you are and your feelings). If you can’t see the video, htclick here.

And please consider a donation:

Skip1 – feeding hungry kids.

Invisible People – helping the homeless.

And thanks!

Genesis Theme Black Friday Sale

Genesis WordPress Theme

As you know, I promote the heck out of premium WordPress themes (affiliate link). Why? Because they make blogging easier. Because they improve functionality that you’d rather not mess with. Because they help me with my blogging, so I want to offer you the same tools.

Brian Gardner at StudioPress just gave me a 25% off code. So, if you’re shopping on Black Friday, here’s something that might be helpful to you. Here’s the promotion:

25% Off Everything at StudioPress

In honor of the crazy shopping traditions known as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we're holding a big sale at StudioPress.

Starting now through next Tuesday, November 30, you can save 25% off everything we sell – including the Pro Plus All-Theme Package that gets you everything we've got and everything we make in the future.

Just use the code BLACK at checkout. If you decide to get the Pro Plus All-Theme Package, you'll save an additional $62 off the list price.

This code is only good through next Tuesday.

To use it, just swing by the site, check out what you want to pick up, and remember to use the code BLACK to get 25% off.

Should You Buy a Theme or Just Design For Yourself?

A theme is a framework. It’s a whole lot of HTML and PHP and CSS done FOR you. It lets you start from something instead of starting from nothing. It doesn’t replace the need for a designer (well, some themes make it less likely to need one for a while. Headway is really pretty out of the box, I’ve observed). But instead, it lets a designer work really well and it lets them work without having to create all the scaffolding and the other stuff.

Knowing HTML and stuff is like saying you’re going to cut down trees to make pencils to write a book. Just write the book. Someone else has cut down the tree, mined the graphite, processed it all, cut it into pencils, glued erasers on the ends, and packaged them.

Business Model Generation – Video Book Review

Run out and buy Business Model Generation: A Handbook for Visionaries, Game Changers, and Challengers (amazon affiliate link). It’s that book that will give you the holes in your business planning. It’s that book that tells you that you could really use a bit more work in ___ department. It’s a great opportunity to see visual thinking applied to a real business challenge. And it’s so well done. Here’s my video book review:
