A Crisis in the Reagan Presidency; Japan's God of Comics; A Closer Look at Telescopes
Dear Readers,

On Nov. 3, 1986, a Lebanese weekly magazine first published the story of controversial arms sales from the United States to Iran, which was later linked to funding of the Nicaraguan Contras, sparking the biggest crisis of Ronald Reagan's presidency. (The article is also available in Spanish.)

On November 3, 1928,
Osamu Tezuka was born. He has been called the "god of comics" in Japan. After writing his first comic strip in third grade, Tezuka published his first professional manga while studying at medical school. His innovations to the field of Japanese comics and animation are evident through the 700 works he produced, which include more than 150,000 pages of manga.

Highlights from SweetSearch2Day:

The Spotlight article is from the "Innovations" series and focuses on the history of the telescope, which was invented more than 400 years ago. For a closer look at telescopes of today, read this article on the Hubble and its planned successors.

Interview of the Day continues to develop into a must-read feature; today, it covers a 2006 Reading Rockets interview with Children's Book author Beverly Cleary, where she says ""When I was in grammar school, I sometimes felt that school didn't want us to read, because there were long questions after everything we read.... I just wanted to read a book and enjoy it. And I think that's what children should do."

The Poem of the Day, from Poets.org, is "The Undertow" by Sasha Steensen.

The Earth Science Picture of the Day is of The Spanish Peaks in Colorado; the accompanying text explains they are on the western edge of what was once the North American Inland Sea.
