My little cousin has two major interests: playing basketball (he's the center on his traveling team), and living the Food Network dream. On his 13th birthday, we took him to a lovely French place where he tried pork belly for the first time. He sent his compliments to the chef, using words like "succulent" and "exquisite." On the ride home, he said he didn't want to brush his teeth because he liked the taste in his mouth too much.
It's truly amazing what a wonderful monster the cooking channels have created. Alton Brown and the Barefoot Contessa have become his gurus, filling him with science and a deep and abiding faith in butter. And this Thanksgiving, he's insisted on doing all of the cooking (his mother has been tasked with clean up). Last week, he researched a wealth of recipes and spent 4-5 days crafting the perfect menu. When I asked him if he needed help, he said: it's easy once you understand that "cooking takes place in half-hour intervals."
This year, I'm thankful for a lot. I couldn't ask for a more loving family, and I'm blessed with wonderful friends. I have the best business partner in the world, and I love my job: I get to spend my days brainstorming t-shirt ideas, producing games, editing books and articles, and working with people who are much more talented than I am. And when I'm tired, and on holiday, and I just want to kick up my feet, my little cousin does the cooking. (Thank you Food Network.) Here's hoping you're finding equal happiness in your corner of the world.
