Steering Committee Real Hollywood Position Descriptions Interested in running for a Metropolis Steering Committee position but not sure what it really involves? I am here to help you, my friend! Here's an insider's view of what each position REALLY entails....
President: When people think of Metropolis, they think of you. Metropolis gets referred to as "your" group. The "powers-that-be" want you to be their friend. You get free lunches with interesting people. Your mom can fill a scrapbook with your press clippings. You get to cut off the other Steering Committee members at meetings. You send out your personal musings to thousands of people each week and most of them will feel compelled to read them. You make friends and influence people.
Vice President: You are Metropolis' compass. Its your job to keep everyone on track, assist committees in achieving their goals, and chair organizational development. Secretary: You control Metropolis. You are the law. Nothing gets in the newsletter, on the calendar, or on the Steering Committee agenda unless you say it does. You decide what goes in the permanent record of Metropolis history. You get to be a hard-ass and no one will dare complain about it. The other Steering Committee members are lost without you.
Treasurer: You write the checks. You get accounting experience without having to attend all those boring business school classes. You present a cool report to the Steering Committee each month showing where the money comes from and goes to You file statements with the IRS and talk to the lawyers. You get to handle the cash.
The Fundraising committee is responsible for raising money for Metropolis and its projects. This group contacts and meets with potential individual and corporate funders, develops ideas for fundraising events, works with Metropolis project leaders in need of funding, sends thank you notes to funders, and keeps funders updated on Metropolis activities. Marketing: You are the guardian of Metropolis' image. You get to be creative. You spread the gospel to the City. You work with our fun advertising agency. You buy cool items with the Metropolis logo on them. You spend time schmoozing with media types. Wacky ideas are welcomed.
The Marketing committee is the media liaison for Metropolis, developing marketing materials, issuing press releases, raising awareness and garnering publicity for the mission, projects and events of Metropolis. This office creates and maintains relationships with local media and works with our advertising, public relations, and media placement agencies. Responsibilities also include maintaining our press kit, business cards, stationary, and brochures. Membership: You can grow Metropolis. You attend lots of fun events and tell people about our great organization. You have the pleasure of seeing how excited new members are to be joining the group. You ask City businesses for discounts. You receive interesting emails from out-of-town people considering a move to St. Louis. The Membership committee is responsible for membership information, benefits, and recruitment. This group oversees our membership database administrator, who maintains the membership database and handles membership mailings. The Membership Chair answers inquiries from current and prospective members, with the help of the committee, recruits new members via information tables at various events, and solicits and maintains special discounts and privileges provided by the Metropolis membership cards.
Leadership/Policy: You empower the next generation. You meet great community leaders who are willing to share their expertise with our members. You learn a lot of new things. You chair a community advisory board. You oversee a staff member for the Metropolis Forum. You get young people ready for their seat at the table. Everyone assumes you are a brilliant leader. You are referred to by cool names such as "wonk" and "guru." You quote obscure legislation with authority on the St. Louis and no one will question your accuracy.
You interact with other political types. Your name may appear in the Arch City Chronicle. This Project Group focuses on cultivating the next generation of St. Louis' leaders. They work to expand leadership and public service unities for people in their 20s and 30s.
Living Environment/Perception: You make the City a better place to be. Your area has no boundaries - any project can be spun as a Living Environment project. The world is your oyster. You have cool catch phrases like "24 hour downtown" and "live, work and play." You have the power to change how people view the City. You promote the good things. You dispell the misperceptions. You question conventional wisdom. You employ guerilla marketing. You annoy your friends and family with crazy postings about wonderful places to enjoy within the City limits.
This Project Group focuses on housing, infrastructure, recreational opportunities, atmosphere, and physical and aesthetic improvements. |
