In the U.S., Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated beginning September 15 each year. But many of the most important dates in the United States' relationship with Puerto Rico and Cuba happened in the 30 days following the end of Hispanic Heritage Month.

On October 18, we wrote about American Memory's entry about Puerto Rico becaming a part of the U.S. in 1898. A day later, we noted that both the Cuban Missile Crisis and Cuban Embargo also began in mid-October.

Today, we recall that, on November 1, 1950, two Puerto Rican nationalists, Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola, tried to assassinate President Truman in hopes of bringing their island closer to independence. The two tried to shoot their way into Blair House, normally the Vice President's resident but where Truman resided during White House renovations proceeded. When the shooting stopped, Torresola and a Secret Service Agent lay dead. Four years later, Puerto Rican Nationalists opened fire in the House of Representatives, wounding five.

On November 1, 1871, author Stephen Crane was born. Although he is considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, Stephen Crane's life and career were cut short before his 30th birthday. His books, essays and poems-the best known of which was "The Red Badge of Courage"-remain among the most revered and referenced today.

Highlights from SweetSearch2Day:

The Big Picture features dramatic photos and stunning scenery of Northern Iceland from the local farmers' annual herding of their horses, which they allow to graze in the wild during the summer months. It is somewhat reminiscent of the annual round-up of ponies on Virginia's Chincoteague Island. But for some of the most stunning pictures of horses juxtaposed with nature, read our feature on The Otherworldly White Turf.

Geography is making a big comeback in the school curriculum. Each day, we link to National Geographic's GeoBee, which tests students' knowledge of geography.
