Governors get mangers under the tree

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The nation's 50 governors got an unexpected Christmas present this month -- Nativity scenes for each of them, sent by the Catholic League in New York, for display in each state capitol building.

In a letter accompanying the small creches, Catholic League President Bill Donohue said it was the group's "sincere hope that (the creche) will be displayed in the Capitol Rotunda alongside secular symbols (e.g., a Christmas tree) this coming Christmas season."

CHICAGO (UPI) -- The retail industry started the Christmas shopping season earlier than ever this year with specials appearing in July.

So how did stores boost the official 29-day shopping period? Opening up on Thanksgiving Day and moving Cyber Monday to Turkey Day itself.

For the first time, the likes of Sears opened the doors on what traditionally has been a retail holiday. It also has been holding Black Friday sales for months to get more shoppers through the doors.

HOUSTON (UPI) -- The holidays create extra duties and extra calories, but U.S. experts suggest exercise be added to everyone's holiday to-do list.

Brotherhood would cut Egypt-Israel ties

CAIRO (UPI) -- The Muslim Brotherhood head said Saturday his party will end the "illegitimate marriage" between Egypt and Israel if it wins Egypt's parliamentary election.

Mohammed Badie gave an interview to al-Quds al-Arabi, an Arabic newspaper in London, The Jerusalem Post reported. He said the United States, Israel and an Egyptian government that "wages war on the Egyptian people" are working against the Muslim Brotherhood.
