Police: Priest hired killer for accuser

DALLAS (UPI) -- A Catholic priest in Texas charged with the 2008 sexual assault of a teenage boy has been charged with trying to hire someone to kill his accuser, police say.

The Rev. John M. Fiala, 52, who was charged with the sexual assault in a rural parish west of San Antonio, was in Dallas County Jail accused of one count of solicitation to murder and two counts of aggravated sex assault of a child, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Bocelli joins D.C. Christmas special bill

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli has joined the lineup for this year's edition of the annual "Christmas in Washington" concert, TNT announced Tuesday.

The concert is to premiere exclusively on the cable network Dec. 17, with Ellen DeGeneres serving as host.

Pope affirms church stand on homosexuality

VATICAN CITY (UPI) -- Pope Benedict XVI affirms in a newly released book homosexuality is something that can never be "morally just."

In "Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times," the pontiff tells German writer Peter Seewald homosexuality is a great trial with which a person may be faced, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

However, the pope said being gay "remains something that is against the nature that God originally willed."

One killed in violent Cairo protest

CAIRO (UPI) -- A male demonstrator was killed in violent clashes between Egyptian police and hundreds of Orthodox Coptic Christian protesters in Cairo, officials said.

Violence erupted Wednesday following a decision to stop construction of a new church in the Giza area, al-Masry-al-Youm said.
