Hockey

NHL: Chicago 2, Los Angeles 1

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane scored for Chicago Saturday and the Blackhawks hung on for a 2-1 decision over Los Angeles.

Sharp got his 15th goal of the year in the second period to break a scoreless tie and later assisted on Kane's ninth of the year 1 minute into the final frame, giving the Hawks a crucial second goal.

The Kings pulled to within 2-1 with 5 minutes to go while on a 5-on-3 power play as Anze Kopitar found the net, but Los Angeles couldn't get any closer.

Corey Crawford earned the victory with a 21-save performance, backstopping Chicago to its seventh win in eight games against Los Angeles.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick stopped 21-of-23 shots in the hard-luck loss, only the second on home ice for Los Angeles this year.

College sports programs fight for logos

NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. college sports programs are becoming more vigilant about policing potential violations by high schools poaching their team logos.

The Internet has also made similar logos more likely to be identified by officials at colleges bent on protecting the images used on revenue-generating products from T-shirts to coffee mugs. Buna High School in Texas, for example, ran afoul of Penn State when a Nittany Lions fan found the Buna Cougar on line and decided it looked familiar, The New York Times reports.

The University of Texas went after Gardner Edgerton High School in Kansas, saying its Trailblazer logo looked too much like the Longhorns' design, and Pittsburgh put the kibosh on the Panther used by Whitmer High School in Toledo, Ohio.

In Florida, Glades Day School in Belle Glade has used an alligator logo since 1965. The school attracted the attention of the University of Florida when its team made the state championship finals last year.

Recently, the Collegiate Licensing Co. sent cease-and-desist letters to Glades Day and high schools in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Vicksburg, Miss., and Ola, Ark., saying their Gators are too similar to the Florida Gator. All four schools are altering their logos in response.

"The problem when you're a defendant is you can spend the money to fight it, and if you lose, you also have to spend the money to change everything," Dineen Wasylik, a Tampa, Fla., trademark lawyer told the Times.
