Sparky Anderson placed in hospice care

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (UPI) -- Baseball Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson has been placed in hospice care, suffering from dementia, family members said Wednesday.

Anderson, 76, managed the Cincinnati Reds to World Series wins in 1975 and 1976 guided the Detroit Tigers to a world championship in 1984.

Family spokesman Dan Ewald told the Detroit Free Press Anderson was under care in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and family members wished "to express appreciation to all friends and fans for the support and kindness they have shown throughout Sparky's career and retirement."

His illness is "the type of ailment that takes a toll over time," Ewald said.

George Lee "Sparky" Anderson played only one season in the majors -- for the 1959 Phillies. But he excelled as a manager, running the Reds from 1970-78 and then becoming the Tigers' longest-serving skipper, guiding the team for 17 years from 1979 through 1995.

Renowned as a humble deflector of praise, Anderson was named the American League Manager of the Year in 1984 and 1987. He compiled a 1,331-1,248 with in Detroit, the Free Press noted.

NBA: LA Lakers 112, Sacramento 100

SACRAMENTO (UPI) -- Kobe Bryant scored 30 points Wednesday and the Los Angeles Lakers used an 11-point run in the third period to put away Sacramento 112-100.

The Lakers remained unbeaten in five games this season, joining Atlanta and New Orleans as the only NBA teams without a loss.

Every Los Angeles starter scored in double figures, with Pau Gasol adding 22 points and Lamar Odom 18. Ron Artest contributed 17 and Derek Fisher had 11.

The key Los Angeles surge gave the Lakers a 77-59 cushion with 6:30 to go in the third period and the Kings came no closer than seven in the game's final minutes.

Sacramento got 21 points from Tyreke Evans. The Kings had won their previous two games.

Eagles' Sims fined $50K for dangerous hit

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Ernie Sims has been fined $50,000 for a dangerous hit delivered during a game last month, the NFL said Wednesday.

Sims was cited for his actions in the Eagles' Oct. 24 contest against the Tennessee Titans during which he hit Titans receiver Lavelle Hawkins.

The linebacker was fined for "unnecessarily striking a defenseless receiver in the neck and head area with his forearms," a league spokesman told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The stiffness of the fine could be related to the NFL's recent crackdown on dangerous hits to the head. Sims is also a repeat offender, having been fined in 2008 and 2009 for unnecessary roughness while playing for Detroit.

Molinari leads WGC event in China

SHANGHAI (UPI) -- Francesco Molinari rode a string of four consecutive birdies Thursday to take the lead of the PGA's WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in China.

Molinari was bogey-free in posting a 7-under-par 65 at the Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai. Lee Westwood, who took over the world No. 1 ranking Monday, matched Molinari's seven birdies but also had a bogey and is in second place at 6-under.

Yuta Ikeda, Noh Seung-yul and Henrik Stenson are tied for third at 5-under 67. Tiger Woods is in a three-player group tied for sixth at 4-under.

Molinari started Thursday's round on the 10th hole and opened with three pars. He had birdies on three of his next four holes and was still 3-under 11 holes into his round. But at No. 3 he chipped in for birdie and then dropped in a short birdie putt at the fourth hole to pull into a tie for the lead at 5-under.

He added an 8-foot putt for birdie at the fifth hole and completed the run with a 10-footer that got him to 7-under.

Westwood's bogey came at the par-4 seventh hole but he answered with back-to-back birdies.

Woods had consecutive birdies from Nos. 2-4 but a bogey at No. 10 kept him back.

Hockey

NHL: Anaheim 3, Tampa Bay 2 (OT)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -- Ryan Getzlaf's slapshot 2:53 into overtime Wednesday lifted the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 decision over Tampa Bay.

Anaheim tied it when Kyle Palmieri scored his first goal of the season with 4:20 remaining in regulation and the Ducks then snapped a two-game losing streak on Getzlaf's fifth goal of the season.

Tampa Bay had won its previous two games. Two of the Lightning's four losses this season have come in overtime.

Steven Stamkos ran his goal total for the season to 10 with a power-play tally early in the second period that gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 advantage.

Jonas Hiller stopped 32 shots to get the victory. It was the fifth straight game in which Hiller has allowed two goals.

Dan Ellis stopped 27-of-30 shots for the Lightning.

Phelps introduces line of spa pools

LAS VEGAS (UPI) -- Michael Phelps, the much medaled U.S. Olympic swimmer, is lending his name and expertise to a new line of mini-swimming pools, an Indiana company says.

Master Spas said Phelps and his coach, Bob Bowman, assisted in the design off a new line of six swim spas or mini-pools, The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday. In the pools, a current of water can be switched on to create a sort of aquatic treadmill.

Phelps won six gold medals and two bronze at the Athens Olympics in 2994 and eight golds in Beijing four years later -- a record gold medal count for a single Olympics. But his marketability took a hit early last year when he was caught on camera smoking marijuana.

In February, Phelps signed an endorsement deal with Under Armour, a Baltimore maker of sports apparel.

Phelps joined Master Spas Chief Executive Officer Bob Lauter for the introduction of the Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas line Wednesday at the International Pool Spas Patio Expo in Las Vegas. The line ranges in price from $25,000 to $45,000.
