Chisox offer salary arbitration to Konerko

CHICAGO (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox said Tuesday they have offered salary arbitration to slugging free agent first baseman Paul Konerko.

The move means Konerko, a Type A free agent, would likely get a hefty raise from his current $12 million salary if he accepts arbitration, which is unlikely.

Instead, he's expected to test the free agent market and the Chisox would be compensated with a high draft pick if he signs elsewhere.

Konerko finished fifth in the 2010 American League Most Valuable Player voting after a 2010 season that saw him hit .312 with 39 home runs and 111 RBI.

The Sox also extended arbitration to reliever J.J. Putz but declined to do so for catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

Pierzynski, the team's starting catcher for the past six seasons, is likely to negotiate a possible return to the White Sox after the Sox lost out in a bid to land free agent catcher Victor Martinez, who now appears poised to sign with the Detroit Tigers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (UPI) -- The Phoenix Coyotes had two goals apiece from Martin Hanzal and Lee Stempniak Tuesday in their 5-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 23 shots he faced en route to the shutout, his first of the season.

Federer, Soderling win at ATP Finals

LONDON (UPI) -- World No. 2 Roger Federer and fourth-seeded Robin Soderling posted round-robin wins Tuesday at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Federer defeated No. 5-seeded Andy Murray 6-4, 6-2 and is 2-0 in Group B play while the No. 5-seeded Murray fell to 1-1. Soderling is also 1-1 after a 7-5, 7-5 win over seventh-seeded David Ferrer, who dropped to 0-2.

Federer lost only eight points in nine service games in the win over Murray. He broke Murray's serve at love in the third game of the first set and grabbed the advantage with a break to end a lengthy game at the beginning of the second set.

Murray was unable to solve Federer's serve. He won one point off Federer's serve until the final game of the first set when he took a 30-0 lead before Federer ran off four quick points for the set.

Soderling didn't face a break point until he was serving for the match at 5-3. Ferrer was able to finish that chance off but fell when Soderling posted his third break and took the match three games later.

The leaders in Group A square off Wednesday. Top-ranked Rafael Nadal goes against No. 3 Novak Djokovic. No. 6-seeded Tomas Berdych plays eighth-seeded Andy Roddick in what is in effect an elimination match in Group A's other match Wednesday.

The top two finishers in each group advance to Saturday's semifinals.
