Rain soaks California; snow in mountains

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Weather forecasters said the rain socking much of California Sunday could produce flooding, particularly along the mountain foothills.

The National Weather Service said flood watches and advisories were posted from Sacramento south to Bakersfield where 4-7 inches of rain were possible in the foothill regions of the San Joaquin Valley.

Hotel uses gems on Christmas tree

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (UPI) -- The Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi says it is sorry a Christmas tree in its lobby appears overdecorated.

The hotel was criticized for using nearly $11 million in jewels as decorations on its 40-foot tall Christmas tree, but said the tree and all its decorations belong to a company called Style Gallery, reported WAM, the Emirates News Agency.

"The hotel is just a venue for exhibiting the tree", the hotel said.

General: N. Korea has more U.S. remains

PYONGYANG, North Korea (UPI) -- North Korea has more remains of U.S. soldiers it is willing to return, the country's top military commander said in Pyongyang Sunday.

The bones and effects -- reportedly including a lone dog tag -- were discovered recently, Maj. Gen. Pak Rim Su told New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

Castro projects higher growth in 2011

HAVANA (UPI) -- A revitalized form of socialism will increase Cuba's growth a full percentage point to 3.1 percent in 2011, President Raul Castro told the National Assembly.

In his speech in Havana Saturday posted on the state-run CubaDebate Web site, Castro said despite his encouragement for Cubans to go into private business, "there will be no going back" to capitalism, CNN reported.
