Gamelan of Java, Vol. 4
Puspa Warna
LYRCD-7460
$14.99
CD

This volume of Gamelan of Java, Vol. 4, Puspa Warna, was designed mainly to showcase how classical Javanese gamelan music—karawitan—has intrinsic and remarkable capabilities of regenerating itself through internal variations.
An out-of-the-ordinary presentation of works, well-known and highly esteemed in classical Javanese gamelan music. Puspa Warna, sent into space with the Voyager, is presented here in two separate performances with different interpretations and internal ensemble variations. Sekar Gadhung is also performed in two different renditions, allowing two pesindhen (female singers) to compete for excellency. The rarely-heard, mystical Gadhung Mlati is sung here by a third outstanding pesindhen. Printed CD notes include contributions by Bapak Sumarsam and Dr. Sarah Weiss, while full notes in an attached PDF file expand on the subject of variations occurring in actual performances by Javanese musicians.

Gamelan of Java, Vol. 5
Cirebon Tradition in America
LYRCD-7461
$14.99
CD

This is a much anticipated and important recording of the Javenese gamelan Cirebon Tradition as practiced in America, beautifully performed and recorded.
Gamelan music is one of the most fascinating and beautiful orchestral traditions in the world, found mainly in Indonesia and Malaysia. The Javanese, the largest ethnic group in Indonesia, have many regional styles of this alluring music. Most recordings of Javanese gamelan have thus far centered on Surakarta and Yogyakarta in south central Java.  But there is another, earlier style of Javanese music that is little known: the traditional music of Cirebon. Even the most seasoned lovers of Javanese gamelan might be surprised at what they hear in this CD.  All five of the classical Cirebon genres are represented, performed by Gamelan Sinar Surya, a dedicated American ensemble that effectively helps keep that tradition alive. In the liner notes, GSS director Richard North describes the well thought-out and enjoyable program.

Music of West Africa: The Mandinka and their Neighbors

Various Artists
LYRDV-2005
$29.99
DVD/CD-ROM

DVD, notes, photos, and sound recordings by Roderic Knight Ph.D.

Includes one DVD and one CD, notes, maps and photos!

Another exclusive new Lyrichord/Multicultural Media DVD and Data CD on the field work of Roderic Knight Ph.D.

This DVD presents ten historical scenes, captured on 8mm film at a time when portable video had not yet emerged as a viable medium.  Eight of the scenes were filmed by Roderic Knight; two were contributed by renowned Gambian expert David Gamble.  With the invaluable assistance of Elio Trabal, OC 2004, the footage has been lifted from the confines of the author's classroom to the present format, enabling its presentation to a wider public. The total duration is 33 minutes.
Each scene focuses on a specific event or musical group.  Five are devoted to regional sub-groups of the broad Mande culture:  The Mandinka of The Gambia, the Koranko of Guinea, and the Serahuli of Mali.  The other five scenes feature the Fula, Balanta, and Jola people.  Also included are glimpses of the Super Eagles, a popular Gambian band, and the first Gambian president, Sir Dawda Jawara, speaking at a political rally.

Included in the package is a supplementary CD-ROM containing a documentary booklet  and a slide show.   The 24-page booklet in pdf format provides a socio-historical introduction to all the ethnic groups, song texts in Mandinka with English translation, information on the film sessions, and two song transcriptions.  The 59 slides in jpeg format include captions to facilitate classroom presentation, and are further documented in the booklet.  Intended to provide additional contextual material for the scenes in the video, they include a map of West Africa, scenes ranging from the streets of Banjul, fishing boats, peanut trucks and markets, to isolated forest roads and mountain villages.  They also include photos keyed to each video clip for a closer look at the musicians and their instruments.

Japanese Kabuki Nagauta Music

The Kyoto Kabuki Orchestra
LAS-7134
$19.99
CD

Remastered and newly released for the first time since the 1960s, JAPANESE KABUKI NAGAUTA MUSIC. played by the The Kyoto Kabuki Orchestra, is now digitally available on the Lyrichord Archive Series. Compared with the Japanese Noh play, which developed a few centuries before, Kabuki is secular, realistic, and even somewhat vulgar. The gestures of Noh are condensed and symbolical; its characters abstract and esthetic. Kabuki teems with color and life. Its music is derived from many sources, including shrine and folk music. This recording fully captures and conveys the authentic Kabuki tradition for contemporary listeners to enjoy.

Japanese Shamisen

Japanese Shamisen Jiuta Ensemble
LAS-7209
$19.99
CD

JAPANESE SHAMISEN, Chamber Music (Jiuta) with Koto and Shakuhachi, originally recorded in the 1960s, is now digitally available on the Lyrichord Archive Series. The shamisen stringed instrument is the great cultural bequest of the Edo Period (1615-1868). Its bittersweet twang accompanied the early folk songs, the sagas of military heroes, and was part of the background cacophony of the pleasure district of old Edo (Tokyo). Chamber Music, in ensemble with koto, shamisen and shakuhachi playing contemporary music, are referred to as jiuta, and are beautifully represented on this recording.

Spanish Cante Flamenco

Cante Flamenco Ensemble
LAS-7363
$19.99
CD

This recording, made in Madrid, features two of the most popular of Spain’s exponents of cante flamenco. Now digitally available on the Lyrichord Archive Series, the magnificent recording of Cante flamenco can be fully enjoyed for the first time since the 1960s. In Cante flamenco, the emphasis for the singer is entirely on subtlety of nuance and the variety of emotional expression. Precise intonation and breath control are among the most important demands placed upon the artist, but above all, this recording captures and conveys the true spirit of the Andalusian gypsies and their enthralling musical traditions.

Important New Recording from Smithsonian Folkways!

Ola Belle Reed was a trailblazing force for women in bluegrass music, an Appalachian woman of hard-earned talent and generous ways who delivered honest music sung from the heart. Her songs "I've Endured," "High on the Mountain," "My Epitaph," and many others forge real-life experiences into music steeled with determination, family tradition, and commanding presence. Classic tracks from the Smithsonian Folkways and Smithsonian Folklife Festival archives remind us why the light of Ola Belle's music shines brightly to this day.
