Sports Update For Indiana Saturday January 29, 2011 Basketball Football Golf Other Tennis Basketball NBA: Sacramento 100, Los Angeles Lakers 95 LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- DeMarcus Cousins helped Sacramento dominate the middle two quarters Friday and the Kings held on for an unlikely 100-95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Sacramento went scoreless for almost 5 minutes of the fourth period and faced a 38-point performance from the Lakers' Kobe Bryant, but survived to defeat Los Angeles for the first time in nine meetings. The Kings had won only 10 games all season before stunning the Lakers on their home court. Sacramento had a 14-point lead heading into the fourth quarter but suffered through a scoring drought that began with 6:50 to play and Los Angeles closed within three. Los Angeles then went without a point for 2 minutes while the Kings were making enough free throws to fight off the Lakers. Cousins scored 27 points and the Kings outscored Los Angeles over the second and third periods 55-38. Omri Casspi added 20 for Sacramento. Bryant made 13-of-27 shots from the field and 10-of-12 from the line. Shannon Brown added 17 for the Lakers. (UPI) -- Bill Haas, moving closer to becoming one of his sport's top players, grabbed the lead Friday among a star-laden field at the Farmers Insurance Open. Haas, son of PGA Tour veteran and current Champions Tour star Jay Haas, shot a 6-under 66 over the Torrey Pines South Course to move two shots in front of Anthony Kim. Tiger Woods, making his 2011 debut after going winless in a season for the first time in his career, was five shots off the pace. Haas recorded his first two PGA Tour victories last year and came close to successfully defending his Bob Hope Classic title last week before he lost in a playoff. That showing pushed him into the top 50 in the world rankings and a win this week would likely move him into the top 35. His 66 Friday was the tournament's low score on the South Course, one of two used for this event and the site of a Tiger Woods victory at the 2008 U.S. Open. Kim was alone in second at 135 after shooting a 67 on the South Course. An all-star group shared third place at 136, including four-time major championship winner Phil Mickelson, John Daly and former Ryder Cup players Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan. Woods was in a tie for 12th at 139 following a 69 on the South Course. Among those tied with Woods were Dustin Johnson, who came close to winning two major titles last year, and Jhonattan Vegas, who became his sport's newest star last week by winning the Hope Classic in just his fifth PGA Tour start. (UPI) -- Ryan Bradley edged two-time defending champion Jeremy Abbott Friday to take the lead after the short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Bradley received a score of 80.39, two points more than Abbott, at Greensboro, N.C. Abbott is trying to become the first skater to win the national title three times in a row since Johnny Weir did so beginning in 2006. Bradley was runner-up at the national championships in 2007. Brandon Mroz, silver medalist two years ago, finished third in the short program with a 71.61 total. Keegan Messing was fourth at 69.79. Abbott recorded the highest free skate score by a men's champion at last year's event, giving him the title over Evan Lysacek and Weir. Abbott then struggled in his short program at the Vancouver Olympics and finished ninth, with Lysacek getting the gold medal and Weir finishing sixth. Lysacek and Weir are not competing this week. Copyright 2011 by United Press International More in Other: UPI Sports Calendar for Saturday, Jan. 29 Tennis Clijsters wins Australian Open title MELBOURNE (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters piled up seven service breaks Saturday in defeating Li Na in three sets in the title match of the Australian Open. Clijsters, third in the world rankings, won 51 percent of the points in receiving Li's serve in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory. It is Clijsters' fourth Grand Slam title. She won the U.S. Open in 2005 and again, after a two-year retirement, in 2009 and 2010. Li, ranked No. 11, was making the first major tournament finals appearance for a Chinese player. Typical of her play in Melbourne, Clijsters had 22 winners versus 26 unforced errors. But it was her defense that claimed the match as she won 49 of 96 of the points off Li's serve. Clijsters took the first eight points of the match but Li seemed to shake an early case of nervousness and won six of the next seven games. Neither player had solid success in holding serve -- there were 13 breaks in the 27-game match -- and the second set opened with four consecutive breaks. Then it was Clijsters who ran off four consecutive games, breaking Li in an eight-point game to even the match. She kept the pressure on in the third set, winning on serve at love and breaking Li's serve twice -- losing her own in the third game -- for a 3-1 lead. Another hold at love put Clijsters up 4-1 and the players held serve the rest of the way. Clijsters, who won 78 percent of the points on serve in the set, finished off the tournament by holding at love when Li's forehand landed wide right. Li, who beat Clijsters in the finals of an Australian Open tune-up in Sydney, had lost only three sets over her seven matches in Melbourne. Her first came in the semifinals against world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. Clijsters earned $2.2 million for the victory pushing her career winnings to more than $23.7 million. It was her 41st overall tournament win. Li's runner-up finish was worth $1.1 million, nearly one-quarter of the $4.5 million she's won in a pro career that began in 1999.
