Sports Update For Indiana Sunday January 2, 2011 | Baseball Orioles' Simon wanted in Dominican slaying SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (UPI) -- Dominican Republic authorities said Sunday Baltimore Orioles pitcher Alfredo Simon is wanted in connection with the shooting death of a 25-year-old man. Dominican police released a statement indicating they are seeking to question Simon, 29, regarding the early Saturday shooting death of Michael Almonte Castillo, 25, and injuries suffered by the man's 17-year-old brother, Dominican newspaper Al Momento reported. Police said the shooter immediately fled the incident at a park in Luperon, a small town in the province of Puerto Plata, about 190 miles north of Santo Domingo. Authorities said they had made telephone contact with Simon and urged him to surrender. The newspaper said Castillo died of a gunshot wound to the chest while his brother, Estarlin Hernandez Castillo, sustained an injury to his right arm. Simon, a Dominican native, has played for the Orioles for three years. Last season he posted 17 saves, compiling a 4-2 record and a 4.93 earned run average in 49 games. Giordano took a long slap shot from near the Edmonton blue line and the puck scooted underneath Nikolai Khabibulin with 14:16 gone in the middle frame, giving the Flames a 2-1 lead and all the scoring they would need. The tally came only 4 minutes after Ryan Jones had pulled the Oilers into a 1-1 tie with his ninth goal of the season. Dustin Penner got control along the boards and Tom Gilbert put the puck on Jones's stick for a one-timer past Mikka Kiprusoff on the play. Tim Jackson also scored for the Flames and Kiprusoff turned aside 16 shots as Calgary reached the .500 mark for the first time in nearly two months. Khabibulin stopped 28-of-30 shots in absorbing the loss, the Oilers' eighth in nine games. Blatter told the Swiss newspaper Sonntags Zeitung he will move personally to establish a committee whose task will be "to ensure there is no corruption at FIFA." "This committee will strengthen our credibility and give us a new image in terms of transparency," Blatter said. The soccer chief said its members will include seven to nine members "not only from sport but from politics, finance, business and culture." Blatter confirmed he himself would not be on the committee in order to maintain its independence. The move comes after Nigeria's Adamu was suspended for bribery last year -- the first FIFA executive committee member ever to be so disciplined. He was banished from the committee for three years and fined $10,700, but says he will appeal.
