Sports Update For Indiana Sunday January 30, 2011 | | Baseball Weeks sets spring deadline for contract MILWAUKEE (UPI) -- Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks said Sunday he has set a spring training deadline to get a contract extension done. Weeks, who has filed for salary arbitration with the team, told MLB.com he doesn't want to begin spring training next month with negotiations for a potential new deal still ongoing. "After spring training (begins), I want to focus on the year and the team," Weeks told the Web site. The first full workouts for the Brewers begin Feb. 22, making for a tight window to get Weeks' contract situation resolved. Instead of a multiyear extension, the infielder and his agent have been focusing on a one-year deal to avoid arbitration. Weeks has filed for $7.2 million in arbitration hearings, while the Brewers have countered with $4.85 million. Weeks last year logged a breakout season with the Brewers, slugging 29 homers with 83 RBI while batting .269. During his seven-year career in Milwaukee, the 28-year-old has compiled 89 home runs and 265 RBI in 642 games, batting .253. The Celtics trailed 57-52 early in the frame before Pierce scored the next six points to put Boston ahead for good. He then added a pair of 3-pointers, setting his team on course for a win in a rematch of last year's NBA Finals. Ray Allen added 21 points, Kevin Garnett contributed 18 and 13 rebounds, and Rajon Rondo distributed 16 assists for the Celtics, who won for the third time in four games. The Lakers, meanwhile, fell to 3-4 in their last seven games despite 41 points from Kobe Bryant, who went 16-of-29 from the field. Lamar Odom added in 15 points and Pau Gasol was held to 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting for the Lakers. (UPI) -- Florida authorities confirmed that a purse found along a road in the Apopka area belongs to boxer Christy Martin, who survived a shooting last fall. Orange County sheriff's deputies took custody of the bag and were analyzing it Sunday for potential clues in the November attack that left Martin with serious stab and gunshot wounds. Martin recovered from the attack and charges were filed against her husband, trainer Jim Martin. The passerby who found the purse Saturday told the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel said he saw Martin's driver's license and glove with blood on it inside. Prosecutors contend Jim Martin allegedly attacked his wife after she announced she was leaving him. Casey had a bogey on the 16th hole in the final round but was still able to hold off Peter Hanson and Miguel Angel Jimenez for his 11th European Tour title but first win in nearly two years. He finished the tournament at 20-under 268 and won $385,500. Hanson, who started Sunday's play tied with Casey for the lead, had a final-hole bogey for a 3-under 69. Jimenez closed with a birdie that allowed him to tie Hanson at 19-under. The runner-up finish was worth $200,800 to each player. Stephen Gallacher, who shot 67 Sunday, was fourth at 18-under and Robert Karlsson had a final-round 66 for a fifth-place score of 17-under. Casey and Hanson headed to the 72nd hole tied but Hanson ended up in the green-side bunker and took a 5 on the par-4 18th. Casey was able to get into position for a 6-foot par putt, which he made for the win. Copyright 2011 by United Press International | | Hockey Report: Sabres sale about to close BUFFALO, N.Y. (UPI) -- The sale of the Buffalo Sabres to energy tycoon Terry Pegula has been virtually finalized and is being closed, a source told WGRZ-TV, Buffalo, N.Y., Sunday. The source said a formal announcement of the transaction, which reportedly has a price tag of $189 million, would be announced in the near future. WGRZ-TV said while the sale was not yet on the agenda of the NHL's Board of Governors, Commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed the Executive Committee met with Pegula Saturday. "No votes were taken this was just a preliminary step," Bettman said. "I believe he's somebody who has the wherewithal to own a franchise." Pegula made his fortune in energy development and sold his company, East Resources, last summer to Royal Dutch Shell for nearly $ billion. Djokovic broke Murray's serve in the Scot's final service game of each set for a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory and his second Grand Slam title. Djokovic's other major championship also was in Melbourne when he beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008. It was the third Grand Slam final loss for Murray, who was beaten in the 2008 U.S. Open championship match and last year in Melbourne by Roger Federer also in straight sets. Djokovic got Federer out of Murray's way in the semifinals and Murray, who had won his last three matches against Djokovic, had to enter Sunday's match confident. Djokovic, however, set the tone by winning the first game at love and then forcing Murray to battle through a 16-point second game just to even the set. Murray stayed on serve until the 10th game when Djokovic got the first break of the match and a one-set lead. Djokovic increased the pressure in the second set by winning the first five games. Murray finally held serve after three consecutive breaks and broke back at love but Djokovic recorded his third break of the set and was in control. Every time Murray seemed to start a comeback, Djokovic answered. Murray opened the third set with a break only to drop serve in the second game. Djokovic added two more breaks in the third set, including in the eighth game. Almost fittingly, the match ended with Murray hitting a forehand into the net for his 47th unforced error. Djokovic won 51 percent of the points off Murray's serve and had Murray on the defensive with 18 break-point chances. On serve, Djokovic won 67 percent of the points. Djokovic was clearly the best player at this year's Australian Open. He lost only one set -- in a tiebreaker in the second round -- over his seven matches. He collected $2.2 million along with the title. Murray's runner-up check was for $1.1 million. Copyright 2011 by United Press International | Advertisement What Exactly Is "The Lottery Black Book"?
