Truck stolen with owner sleeping in back

DENVER (UPI) -- A Denver man who has been living in his pickup truck camper said he was shocked when he woke up to find someone stealing the vehicle with him still inside.

Terry Bannick, 59, said he was sleeping in bed of his 1993 Ford F-150 when he woke up at about 1:30 a.m. MST Saturday to the sound of the truck's door opening and closing, The Denver Post reported Wednesday.

Bannick said a man started the truck, using keys Bannick had left in the ignition, and drove the vehicle around for about 2 1/2 hours.

"I tried talking to him, but he wouldn't even look at me" through the sliding rear-view window, Bannick said. "I said, 'Why are you taking my truck? Where are you going?'"

Bannick said he called police on his cellphone but he was unable to give a good description of his location due to his restricted views of the road from the camper.

"He could hear me talking to the police," Bannick said. "I don't know what was wrong with him."

Police finally caught up with the truck just as it was running out of gas. Darwin Brown, 42, was arrested and charged with auto theft and marijuana possession. He was ordered held without bail.

Police find marijuana, alligator in home

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (UPI) -- Police responding to a report of a possible domestic disturbance in New Mexico said they discovered marijuana and a 2-foot-long alligator in the home.

Los Lunas police Sgt. Archie Romero said he and another officer responded to the home of Amanda Baker, 24, about 1:40 a.m. Saturday on a report of a possible domestic disturbance, the Valencia County News-Bulletin reported Wednesday.

Baker told the officers she had been arguing with her boyfriend and he left the home on foot.

The officers said they discovered small plastic bags of marijuana, cannabis plants and marijuana paraphernalia in the home. Romero said he heard a sound coming from behind some cardboard boxes and Baker told him it was her pet alligator.

Baker was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana plants, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. The alligator was turned over to Los Lunas Animal Control.

Black rhino born at St. Louis Zoo

ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- Missouri's St. Louis Zoo said a black rhino calf born this month was the first of its species to be born at the zoo in 20 years.

Zoo spokeswoman Janet Powell said officials are weighing potential names for the calf born Jan. 14 to mamma rhino Kati Rain and father Ajabu, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Wednesday.

Officials said the infant rhino weighs 120 1/2 pounds and is being well-cared for by its mother. They said the calf was the first born to the 6-year-old parents, who came to the zoo in 2007.

Black rhinos as classified as critically endangered, with only 2,300 counted in the wild in 1993, down from about 65,000 in 1970. Zoo officials said the calf was the first black rhino born at the zoo in about 20 years.

45-pound lizard caught at condo complex

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UPI) -- Authorities in California said a 45-pound monitor lizard was caught wandering the grounds of a condominium complex.

The Riverside County Department of Animal Services said officer Jenny Selter responded to a 2:30 p.m. PST Tuesday call about a loose lizard at the Riverside complex and she arrived to find a 5-foot-long monitor strolling down the complex's sidewalk, The (Riverside) Press-Enterprise reported Wednesday.

The department said Selter used a catch pole to ensnare the reptile and loaded it into her truck with the help of a police officer.

Animal Services spokesman John Welsh said investigators believe the lizard is an escaped pet and they are trying to locate the owner. He said monitors are not illegal to keep in the state.
