Theme Parks Theme Parks Find Theme Parks Water Parks Roller Coasters From Arthur Levine, your Guide to Theme Parks This week, let's go back to the future for two classic parks in the Northeast U.S.: the legendary Coney Island and the modest trolley park, Quassy, in Connecticut. This season, both parks will be building on their storied histories by introducing three new roller coasters. Are you scratching your head over the term, "trolley park?" We'll explore that as well. New Coasters, New Screams Coming to Coney It's been decades since a major new roller coaster opened at Brooklyn's famed Coney Island. This spring, two are set to debut. Get ready to ride Soaring Eagle, a flying coaster on which riders will navigate the track in a nearly prone "superhero" flying position, and Steeplechase Coaster, which will feature racehorse seats rather than traditional coaster cars (and harks back to Coney Island's legendary, circa-1908 Steeplechase ride). The spotlight will be on Quassy this spring when the funny-sounding park in Middlebury, Connecticut debuts Wooden Warrior, a junior wooden coaster and its first major coaster in, well, forever. And by forever, I mean since 1908. The trolley park, one of a handful still in operation, is a throwback to a nearly bygone era. Quassy (which is short for the park's Lake Quassapaug) doesn't charge admission--yup, you read that right--offers swimming at its lake beach, allows guests to bring their own food to its picnic grove, and offers classic rides such as the Little Dipper roller coaster, a helicopters ride, and a circa-1924 carousel.
