World's oldest woman dies in Texas at 115

JACKSONVILLE, Texas (UPI) -- The world's oldest woman, Eunice Sanborn, has died in Jacksonville, Texas, of natural causes at the age of 115, her caregiver said.

Sanborn was born on July 20, 1895, in Lake Charles, La., and was declared the oldest person in the United States last April. Last November, the death of a nun in the French West Indies elevated her to the global elder status, The Jacksonville Daily Progress reported Tuesday.

George W. Bush daughter backs gay marriage

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush, has taped a video supporting marriage for gay and lesbian couples in New York.

The endorsement is to be released Tuesday, The New York Times reports.

Bush, 29, one of the former president's twin daughters, lives in Manhattan, where she works for the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum. Her father supported a constitutional amendment that would have banned same-sex marriage.

Japanese volcano erupts with a bang

TOKYO (UPI) -- A volcano simmering for days erupted so violently in southwestern Japan Tuesday, the concussion wave shattered windows, officials said.

The 4,700-foot Mount Shinmoedake eruption around 7:50 a.m. blew out windows at a hotel and hospital in nearby Kirishima, the Mainichi Daily News reported.

One elderly hospital patient was cut by flying glass, medical staff said.

Queensland girds for Katrina-like cyclone

CAIRNS, Australia (UPI) -- A Hurricane Katrina-like cyclone roared toward waterlogged northeast Australia Tuesday as officials airlifted hospital patients and urged all residents to flee.

Cyclone Yasi "is huge and life threatening," Queensland state Premier Anna Bligh told reporters.
