Woo-hoo! Phil predicts early spring

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (UPI) -- Furry weather forecaster Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow Wednesday, indicating spring is just weeks around the corner.

"No shadow. Early Spring!" the groundhog -- OK, an unknown person writing for Phil -- posted on his Facebook page.

Of course, a winter storm was pushing through Pennsylvania, blocking the sun.

Leaked cable reveals more 9/11 plotters

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable revealed previously unknown participants in the Sept. 11, 2001, plot to attack U.S. cities, several newspapers reported.

Syrians call for 'day of rage' protest

DAMASCUS, Syria (UPI) -- Syrian opposition groups issued calls for mass protests Friday and Saturday in Damascus and elsewhere through social networking sites.

Organizers called on the public to join in demanding an end to corruption and "a state of emergency in Syria," The Financial Times reported.

Egyptian army calls on protesters to leave

CAIRO (UPI) -- Egyptian military officials called on anti-government activists to go home as protests entered their ninth day Wednesday.

"You have the power to bring stability back to the country. We are urging you as respectful citizens to go back home," the Wall Street Journal quoted an Egyptian military spokesman saying.
