Hall of Famer Duke Snider dies at 84

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Former Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers star and baseball Hall of Famer Duke Snider has died at age 84, the team announced Sunday.

Snider, a Los Angeles native, had his best season in 1955 when the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in the World Series, overcoming years of postseason futility and earning the franchise its first-ever championship.

That year, Snider hit .309 with 42 homers, 136 RBI and scored 126 runs, finishing second in NL MVP voting to teammate Roy Campanella.

Snider also won a World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959.

For his 18-year career, Snider batted .295 with 407 home runs and 1,333 RBI in 2,143 games and still remains the Dodgers' all-time leader in home runs (389) and RBI (1,271).

He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Dodgers retired uniform number (4) that season.

"Duke was one of the truly legendary Dodgers who made his mark first in Brooklyn and then in his hometown of Los Angeles," Dodgers owner and chairman Frank McCourt said. "I had the pleasure of spending time with him on several occasions and he was a truly wonderful man."

COL BKB: Ohio State 82, Indiana 61

COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI) -- Deshaun Thomas came off the bench to score 22 points Sunday, propelling third-ranked Ohio State past Indiana 82-61.

Thomas went 7-of-9 from the field and drained two 3-pointers after leading scorer Jared Sullinger was saddled with foul trouble for the Buckeyes (27-2, 14-2 Big Ten), who maintained their hold on first place in the conference standings and made a case to regain their No. 1 status.

William Buford added 15 points and David Lighty had 11 points for OSU, which stayed a full game ahead of Purdue in the Big Ten standings with two regular-season games remaining.

Verdell Jones III posted 14 points and Christian Watford added 12 for Indiana (12-17, 3-13).

Family silent on Roethlisberger wedding

PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- The family of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's girlfriend would not comment on wedding rumors Sunday.

TMZ.com said it had a "save the date" announcement for a July 23 wedding of Roethlisberger and Ashley Harlan in Pittsburgh.

Harlan's father, David, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from his home near New Castle, Pa., it would be up to the couple to decide what to say and when.

Roethlisberger and the Harlan family also did not respond to reports of an engagement in January.

Harlan is from Hickory Township, Lawrence County, where her parents still live.

She graduated from Laurel High School, where she played softball, and earned a bachelor's degree in health science and a master's as a physician assistant from St. Francis University in Loretto, Pa.

Donald tops Kaymer, claims world No. 3

MARANA, Ariz. (UPI) -- Briton Luke Donald bested top-ranked Martin Kaymer Sunday, winning the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and claiming the world No. 3 ranking.

Donald beat Kaymer 3-and-2 to take his third career PGA Tour title. It came one day after Kaymer's win over Bubba Watson in the semifinals assured the German the world No. 1 spot.

Donald's No. 3 ranking is the highest he's ever attained. When this week's ranking are released Monday, Lee Westwood is expected to be second, followed by Donald and U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell.

That means Tiger Woods, who was eliminated in the first round of the Match Play Championships, will be out of the Top 4 for the first time since 1992 and Europeans will hold all four top spots.

Matt Kuchar defeated Watson, 2 & 1, to claim the third-place match.

Hockey

NHL: Nashville 3, Columbus 2

NASHVILLE (UPI) -- David Legwand's goal with 1 1/2 minutes left in the game Sunday boosted the Nashville Predators to a 3-2 decision over Columbus.

Legwand netted the go-ahead tally when Blue Jackets goalie Mathieu Garon gave up a big rebound on a shot by Martin Erat that found the Nashville center in the right circle, where he one-timed it home.

Shea Weber added a goal and an assist, and Jonathon Blum also found the net as Nashville snapped a four-game losing streak and pulled into the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Pekka Rinne made 25 saves in the win.

The Blue Jackets got goals from Kris Russell and Matt Calvert. Columbus goalie Garon stopped 25 shots.

Riesch edges Vonn in World Cup super-G

ARE, Sweden (UPI) -- Germany's Maria Riesch won the narrowest of victories over Lindsey Vonn of the United States Sunday in the women's World Cup super-G in Sweden.

Riesch edged Vonn by 1/100th of a second to increase her lead over the American in the World Cup overall standings to 196 points.

Both were nearly flawless on the course at Are, which was described by the skiers as fast and technical with lighting conditions that were not particularly helpful.

Riesch finished in 1 minute, 13:24 seconds and Vonn came in at 1:13.25. Julia Mancuso of the United States finished third, marking the third time she and Vonn have shared the podium this season.

"I thought I skied a good race; unfortunately I lost by a hundredth of a second, which is a snap of your finger," said Vonn. "That's life."
