Rays introduce signees Damon, Ramirez

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (UPI) -- Former Boston Red Sox teammates Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez were officially introduced Tuesday as new members of the Tampa Bay Rays.

The pair, appearing with their agent Scott Boras and Tampa Bay team officials, kicked off their stints with the team by assuring fans they can still play and will do what it takes to win another American League East title for the Rays.

After helping the Red Sox end a historic championship drought with a 2004 World Series victory, the two have gone their separate ways. Damon last year played with the Detroit Tigers and Ramirez split time between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox.

"This is my dream team," Damon, an Orlando, Fla., native, told reporters. "I'll see much more of (my family and friends). I love this opportunity to come back home and hopefully help this team win a championship."

"I want to show people that I can still play," Ramirez added, saying he could have signed elsewhere for more money.

Both have signed one-year contracts with the Rays. Damon's is reportedly worth $5.25 million with Ramirez signing for $2 million, down from the $10 million he made last season.

NHL: San Jose 5, Phoenix 3

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) -- A shorthanded breakaway goal by Patrick Marleau proved to be the decisive tally Tuesday in the San Jose Sharks' 5-3 win over Phoenix.

Marleau's wrist shot off an assist by Joe Pavelski was one of four goals the Sharks rang up in the final period to notch their fifth victory in six games.

Pavelski scored twice for the Sharks, who also had a goal from Kyle Wellwood and an empty-netter by Joe Thornton that closed out the scoring.

Antti Niemi started for San Jose and gave up three goals on 27 shots. Alex Stalock came in and stopped all nine shots he faced.

Ilya Bryzgalov allowed four goals on 37 shots in goal for the Coyotes.

Phoenix, which had won its last five road games, led 3-0 in the second period after first-period goals by Radim Vrbata and Keith Yandle. Paul Bissonnette tallied at 10:13, but that was the last goal the Coyotes could muster.

Phoenix was outshot 15-6 in the third period.

Greece back in FIFA Top 10, Spain No. 1

NYON, Switzerland (UPI) -- Greece returned to the Top 10 in the FIFA men's soccer rankings, updated Wednesday with Spain and the Netherlands still in the first two positions.

There were relatively few matches over the last month, with the AFC Asian Cup dominating the schedule, and little movement in the higher poll positions. The Greece move from 11th to 10th was the only change in the Top 10.

Japan, the Asian Cup champion, jumped 12 places to 17th in the rankings and the changes ahead of it -- seven teams, including Greece, moving up one place each -- were the results of Egypt falling precipitously.

Egypt won its three friendly matches in January but a devaluation of points awarded earlier meant a net loss of 327 rankings points and a drop from 10th to 33rd in the rankings.

Spain, with 1,887 points, is solidly in the No. 1 position with the Netherlands (1,723) second. Germany (1,485) is third followed by Brazil (1,446) at No. 4.

The fifth place is occupied by Argentina (1,367) followed by No. 6 England (1,195), Uruguay (1,152) in seventh, Portugal (1,090) taking the eighth spot and Croatia (1,075) in ninth. Greece has 1,016 rankings points.

The FIFA world rankings are determined by points awarded from match results in a three-year period, with more recent games given greater weight. Teams get additional points for playing relatively strong opponents. The next FIFA men's rankings are to be released March 9.

Nalbandian in, Monaco ousted in Santiago

SANTIAGO, Chile (UPI) -- Top-seeded David Nalbandian won but No. 2 seed Juan Monaco was ousted Tuesday in the first round of the clay-court Movistar Open in Santiago, Chile.

In a pair of matches involving four Argentine players, Nalbandian advanced by besting Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, while Monaco fell 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Maximo Gonzalez.

Monaco had reached the finals of the Chilean event in 2010 and 2008. He fell to Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in last year's championship match and to Chilean star Fernando Gonzalez three years ago.

Also advancing in Santiago Tuesday were seventh-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini, who downed Poland's Lukasz Kubot 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and No. 8 seed Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, who rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Argentine qualifier Facundo Bagnis.
