U.S. stock indexes head lower

NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. stock indexes turned lower in New York Monday afternoon, as higher crude oil prices rattled investor confidence.

April delivery crude oil prices topped $106 per barrel, as supply concerns related to the conflict in Libya have dominated the commodities market.

In early-afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average lost 93.66 points, 0.81 percent, 12,071.68.

The Nasdaq was off 48.17 points or 1.73 percent to 2,736.50.

Southwest joins airlines in ticket hikes

DALLAS (UPI) -- Southwest Airlines says it has joined other U.S. airlines in hiking ticket prices to compensate for more expensive fuel.

"On Friday, Southwest matched a fare increase of $5 one-way as a result of rising fuel costs," Southwest spokeswoman Ashley Dillon told United Press International in an e-mail Monday. "As an industry, we are all facing the cost pressures surrounding fuel prices.

Western Digital buys Hitachi unit

IRVINE, Calif. (UPI) -- Western Digital said Monday it has agreed to buy Hitachi Ltd.'s data storage products subsidiary for $4.3 billion.

The deal for Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is a cash-and-stock transaction, Western Digital said in a news release on its Web site. Under the definitive agreement, Hitachi will receive $3.5 billion in cash and 25 million common shares of Western Digital valued at $750 million, based on a closing stock price of $30.01 as of last Friday.

Boom times for Amazon and Seattle techies

SEATTLE (UPI) -- Amazon is on a hiring spree, posting 1,900 openings in its vast new Seattle headquarters.

"We're looking for very talented software developers," Susan Harker, director of global talent acquisition, told the Seattle Times.

The company also is looking for recruiters, product managers, sales staff, graphic designers and supply-chain analysts.
