Warnings on vegan diets for dogs

NEW YORK (UPI) -- People putting their dogs on vegan diets thinking it's healthy for them are not doing the animals any favors, U.S. veterinarians say.

While a vegan diet may provide a number of health benefits for humans looking to lose weight and lower their cholesterol and blood pressure, veterinarians say that going meatless may not be the best thing for dogs, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

Clinton spokesman: Leaker treatment stupid

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (UPI) -- P.J. Crowley, spokesman for U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, calls the Defense Department's treatment of the accused Wikileaks leaker "stupid."

Obama ready to tap oil reserve if needed

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. President Obama said Friday he would tap emergency oil reserves if needed, while reassuring Americans soaring gas prices wouldn't affect economic growth.

"Everybody should know that, should the situation demand it, we are prepared to tap the significant stockpile of oil that we have in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve," Obama said during a news conference.

Oakland's black population in decline

OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI) -- The African-American community in Oakland, Calif., for decades a shaper of black identity for the nation, has shrunk in size in the past decade, figures show.
