Switching from one side of a biz to another can be rewarding, like when Robert Evans left his infant acting career in a dumpster, then adopted Rosemary's Baby. Switching sides to bring you suds, the guy behind Social 121, opening tomorrow for dinner.
Social's the first solo project from a Common Table investor who spent decades in food-distribution; now, he's taken over the old Loft 610, keeping the brick walls, wood paneling, and view-tastic VIP loft, backlighting the wall-to-ceiling bottle display with alternating purple and green, and installing a new main bar complete with chilled vodka and tequila taps, also how Gregory Hines earned money in Mexico. Eats kick off with jalapeno-artichoke dip and two sliders (sticky-bunned pork belly w/ soy pickle & Sriracha; brioche'd Kobe, w/ aioli & relish), then move on to bone-in pork chops in Maker's Mark sauce, bagna cauda-sauced sea bass over Yukons, and, on brown-buttered bacon & scallion risotto, sweet-mustard-glazed salmon, as opposed to glazed Salman, i.e., Rushdie after rolling a Fatwa'n. Cocktails run from a dual-tequila'd Paloma to an Adult Arnold Palmer that throws in peach schnapps just for the hell of it, and bottle service is available throughout, though Genie-in-a-Bottle service was canceled when people kept wishing Christina Aguilera would just disappear.
The plan's to eventually have equal parts food, art, and music, starting with entertainment like DJ Brandon, who does regular gigs for FC Dallas and the Cowboys, whose player-turned-coach faces many challenges, but not the most difficult one of all: deciding how long the Kidd stays in the picture.
