Older gardeners eat more vegetables

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (UPI) -- Older people who garden eat more vegetables -- but not fruit -- researchers at Texas A&M University and Texas State University found.

Aime Sommerfeld, Amy McFarland, Tina Waliczek and Jayne Zajicek said studies show poor nutrition is one of several factors responsible for mortality and morbidity in the elderly and is comparable to deaths caused from cigarette smoking.

The researchers collected data via an online survey was posted on a Web site for one month -- 261 questionnaires were completed by adults age 50 and older.

"Our results support previous studies that indicated gardeners were more likely to consume vegetables when compared with non-gardeners. Interestingly, these results were not found with regard to fruit consumption," Waliczek said in a statement.

The research also showed the length of time an individual reported having participated in gardening seemed to have no relationship to the number of vegetables and fruits they reportedly consumed.

"This suggests that gardening intervention programs late in life would be an effective method of boosting vegetable and fruit consumption in older adults," Waliczek said.

The findings are published in the journal HortTechnology.

Fewer pounds gained in dense urban areas

BOSTON (UPI) -- African-American women who live in densely populated urban areas gain less weight than those in more sprawling auto-oriented areas, U.S. researchers say.

Lead author Patricia Coogan, a senior epidemiologist at the Slone Center and an associate professor of epidemiology at Boston University School of Public Health, and colleagues assessed the association of women's residential environments with weight change and the incidence of obesity during a six-year period of follow-up in the Black Women's Health Study.

The researchers focused on nearly 18,000 African-American women who lived in the New York, Chicago or Los Angeles metropolitan areas, considered dense urban neighborhoods.

After six years, those with the high urban density scores had lower incidence of obesity versus the women who lived in suburban or rural neighborhoods with low urban scores -- mainly because they walk more.

The findings are published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

U.S. life expectancy continues to rise

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) - The death rate in the United States fell for the tenth straight year, according to federal statistics released this week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report also showed life expectancy in the United States increased to 78.2 years, up slightly from 78 years in 2008. Life expectancy for males increased two-tenths to 75.7 years and up one-tenth - 80.6 years - in females.

Among the white population, life expectancy increased by two-tenths of a year.

Among blacks, the rate remained unchanged - 70.9 years for men and 77.4 years in women.

The life expectancy gap between the white and black population is 4.3 years.

Overall, there were 2,436,682 deaths in the U.S. in 2009, 36,336 fewer than the year before.

Parents: A safety net for adult children

MINNEAPOLIS (UPI) -- There is evidence that parental assistance for children who are young adults promotes progress toward autonomy and self-reliance, U.S. researchers say.

Study author Teresa Swartz and colleagues collected data to examine the conditions under which young adults are more likely to receive financial support for living expenses, or to live in the parental home.

Almost half of the respondents received either money for living expenses or lived with their parents, or both, in their mid-20s. However, only 10 percent to 15 percent received financial or housing help when in their early 30s, Swartz says.

The likelihood of receiving financial help decreased 15 percent each year, and the likelihood of living with parents decreased by 18 percent each year, Swartz says.

"These results indicate that young people do eventually become independent of parents as they grow older," she says.

Parental aid serves as "scaffolding" to help prop up adult children who are working toward financial self-sufficiency and as "safety nets" for those who have experienced serious difficulties, Swartz says.

The findings are published in the Journal of Marriage and Family.

Study: Tai chi lowers depression in older people

David Goodhue - AHN News Reporter

Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) - Tai chi has been shown to lower the instances of depression in elderly people, according to a UCLA study.

The researchers prescribed a gentle, westernized version of the martial art to study participants, combined with standard depression treatment, and found greater improvement in the level of the condition.

The participants also experienced an overall improvement in quality of life, better memory and cognition and more energy. The tai chi group saw more improvement than another group that was prescribed education classes along with standard depression treatment.

Depression is a common ailment among the elderly, with 2 million Americans age 65 and older suffering from the condition. This includes half of those living in nursing homes.

The suicide rate among white men over 85 is six times the national rate.

A report on the study is published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
