Some food can help prevent tooth decay

ORANGE, Calif. (UPI) -- Dentists often tell patients to avoid sugary foods to prevent tooth decay, but U.S. researchers say there also are consumables beneficial to oral health.

"The bacteria that contribute to tooth decay, Streptococcus mutans, feed on the sucrose -- the sugar -- that we eat," Louis Amendola, Western Dental's chief dental director says in a statement. "As they multiply, the bacteria release acids that lead to tooth decay."

Experts at Western Dental, a dental HMO and clinical provider of dental services in California, Arizona and Nevada, suggest some food can help maintain a smile's health and beauty including:

-- Although most chewing gum is a sticky, sugary dental disaster, sugar-free brands containing the natural sweetener xylitol can improve dental health.

-- Drinking green or black tea, which delivers naturally occurring fluoride to the mouth. For example, University of Illinois at Chicago researchers found chemical components in black tea inhibit the growth of glucosyltransferase, an enzyme that helps plaque adhere to tooth enamel.

-- Drink tap fluoridated water.

-- Having cheese for dessert could help prevent tooth decay and help repair tooth surfaces because cheese may reduce enamel demineralization, neutralize acids formed in plaque and, through increased saliva flow, flush away sugars.

-- Crunchy, crispy fresh fruit and vegetables such as carrots, apples and cucumbers help protect teeth by stimulating the gums and boosting the production of saliva, which helps flush away sugars and food particles.

Canada announces umbilical stem cell bank

OTTAWA (UPI) -- Canadian officials announced Monday the country's first national umbilical cord blood bank to store stem cells will be supported with $48 million in funding.

Health ministers say the funding announcement meets a call for a national, taxpayer-supported approach, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

"We have long recognized the need for our own publicly funded umbilical cord blood bank," Nova Scotia Health and Wellness Minister Maureen MacDonald said.

"This represents a substantial public investment today in life-saving treatments that will benefit Canadian patients and the country's healthcare system for the long term."

The national plan, to be implemented over eight years, aims to bank 20,000 cord blood units. It will include two cord blood stem cell labs and a collections network across Canada, Canadian Blood Services said.

Blood that remains in the umbilical cord after birth contains stem cells that can be used to regrow blood and bone-marrow cells, and to treat diseases such as leukemia and some immune disorders.

An estimated 70 percent of patients who need a stem cell transplant must look outside their families for a match, CBS said, and a national, public umbilical cord blood bank will improve the odds of finding suitable cord blood for patients.

2nd opinion urged for depression diagnosis

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (UPI) -- A North Carolina English professor recommends people diagnosed with depression get a second opinion, pointing out he was misdiagnosed for years.

Eric Wilson, a professor of English at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., said he had to muster everything in him to seek a second opinion for his mental illness.

"We feel we have more ownership of what we see as our body and physical health so, if a doctor gives me a diagnosis I don't like, I'm likely to get a second opinion," Wilson said in a statement. "It just wasn't the same for mental health."

Wilson, who was incorrectly diagnosed with depression, credits the loving persistence of his wife for pushing him beyond that first incorrect diagnosis.

In his book, "The Mercy of Eternity: A Memoir of Depression and Grace," he described his decades of broken relationships, multiple flirtations with suicide, and manic highs and lows, before he received his accurate diagnosis of bipolar II mixed -- having symptoms of acute manic episodes and depressive episodes at the same time.

This form of bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose because the patients are highly functioning and extremely productive, and the highs can masquerade as general happiness, Wilson said.

As many as 69 percent of initial diagnoses of people with bipolar disorder are incorrect, Wilson said, noting the wrong medication can have devastating effects, plunging a patient into deeper depression.

Some brides getting plastic surgery

SACRAMENTO (UPI) -- Many brides want to look their best on their wedding day and for some that includes plastic surgery, a California cosmetic surgeon says.

Dr. Jagdev Heir, medical director of Sacramento Surgical Arts, an accredited cosmetic, oral and maxillofacial surgery center in Sacramento and Yuba City, says an increasing number of brides are seeking cosmetic solutions to make sure they look picture perfect.

"Brides are choosing procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction, Botox, Collagen, and other injectables and fillers," Heir says in a statement.

Heir estimates that brides and their bridal parties who come to his practice spend anywhere from $300 to $6,000 on procedures in preparation for the special day.

Heir offers do's and don'ts for wedding-related cosmetic procedures:

-- Do plan ahead. Some procedures need to be performed four to six months before the wedding date.

-- Do find a surgeon you can trust.

-- Do find out how the surgeon cares for clients after the procedure.

-- Don't make a hasty decision -- it's not only about your wedding so choose what's right for your appearance.

-- Don't use surgery in lieu of a healthy lifestyle.

-- Don't expect surgery to turn the clock back 30 years, though five or 10 years is realistic.
