Lawyer sues to know mayor's age

WARREN, Mich. (UPI) -- A Michigan lawyer's lawsuit against a city claims the mayor's "personal aversion" to giving his age could violate laws.

Attorney Arthur Garton's lawsuit against the city of Warren claims officials were slow to respond to his Freedom of Information Act request and eventually produced documents with Mayor Jim Fouts' date of birth redacted, The Detroit News reported Wednesday.

"The mayor clearly does not want to disclose this information because he has a personal aversion to the issue of age and feels that this information should not be freely disseminated or discussed," Garton said in his Macomb Circuit Court filing.

Warren City Attorney James Biernat said documents without the information redacted are on their way to Garton.

A Michigan secretary of state official revealed Fouts' birthday Tuesday as Aug. 8, 1944, making him 66 years old.

FBI: Woman hired hit man on Internet

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (UPI) -- Federal investigators said a Pennsylvania woman used the Web site hitmanforhire.com to attempt to have her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend killed.

Marissa Mark, 28, formerly of Allentown, Pa., was arrested Tuesday in Jersey City, N.J., on allegations she used the Web site to make a $19,000 down payment to a hit man to kill a woman identified only as A.L.R. of California, the Philadelphia Daily News reported Wednesday.

The FBI said Mark hired the Web site's creator, a Las Vegas casino dealer named Essam Ahmed Eid, to shoot the woman in the head in September 2006.

However, investigators said Eid confronted A.L.R. and told her he could not kill her because she looked like his daughter. He allegedly offered to kill Mark on her behalf, the newspaper reported.

A.L.R. contacted authorities and Mark was arrested, the report said. Investigators said Eid is believed to have fled to Ireland.

Woman hits three moose in 10 months

HARBOUR GRACE, Quebec (UPI) -- A Canadian woman is asking the Newfoundland government to take action after she experienced three road collisions involving moose since May 2010.

Patricia Regular of Harbour Grace, who said she totaled two cars in the moose crashes, said the large animals are increasing in number and she wants officials to do more to keep them away from roads, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Thursday.

Police figures for 2010 recorded 741 collisions involving moose and vehicles in Newfoundland, twice the number from about 10 years earlier.

A citizen's group called the Save Our People Action Committee said it wants officials to reduce the moose population in the province.

"The numbers being doubled like we're seeing. Something has to be done, and we can't wait," committee representative Eugene Nippard said.

Fugitive snake found in neighbor's john

PAISLEY, Scotland (UPI) --A Scottish retiree frightened by a snake in his bathroom learned soon afterward that the reptile was his upstairs neighbor's much-loved missing pet.

Dennis Mulholland, 67, of Paisley told the Daily Record of Glasgow he thought the snake was a rubber toy until he poked it with the remote control to his TV and it moved.

"I was off like a shot," he said. "I just slammed the door and ran out."

Two police officers who responded to his emergency call were also too frightened to handle the snake, he said.

While he was waiting for the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to send an agent, Mulholland went upstairs to ask Darren Hendry if he could use his toilet.

Hendry said his California king snake, Mad Max, disappeared more than a month ago.

The snake had lost weight during its weeks on the loose but was otherwise in good condition. It is now back in its tank, getting its regular meal of one dead rat a week.
