Gunner's Run
A watering hole named after a body of water
1001 N 2nd St; NoLibs; 215.923.4600

People love to talk about what used to be in the neighborhood, like a strip mall that was formerly a farm, or how Applebee's sadly discontinued the Teriyaki Chicken Sizzling Stir Fry. For a spot homaging a bygone neighborhood feature, hit up Gunner's Run.

GR's a new NoLibs bar 'n eatery in the former Swift Half space, named for the creek that used to put the fish in Fishtown, and doing up a slew of eats and brews in an interior full of stone tile and butcher block tables, with a gigantic map of Philly circa 1885 on one wall and another dominated by a large wooden bar, joining Nancy Kerrigan's knee on a list of "things dominated by bars". The menu's in a testing phase, but current starters include mini Kobe corn dogs with a mustard mayo; there're also sandwiches like a short rib sloppy joe on a potato roll, their signature Bad Luck Burger (a special sauce-topped double), and the chicken cutlet/ Oaxaca cheese/ refried bean torta, or Mexican sandwich, the pressures within which being exactly what made Carlos so Slim. Current mains include daily specials like Monday's potato pierogies with kielbasa and braised cabbage, and Tuesday's Salzburger wiener schnitzel with mushrooms, bacon, a fried egg, and spaetzle, plus constants like short rib pot roast with mixed veggies or buttermilk fried chicken: a leg and thigh along with a biscuit and giblet gravy, which, despite its ingredients, is anything but offal.

Washing it all down're offerings from their completely packed liquor shelves (including a currently in-development cocktail list and during brunch, a 20ft table of stuff to load into custom Bloody Marys), and brews like Victory's Headwater Pale Ale and cider from Original Sin, which many consider to be the removal of the best Chimicheesecake in town.

They're soft open now for dinner, but grand opening's this weekend. Check the site at gunnersrun.com.
