Rash of statue thefts hits California

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (UPI) -- Thieves have been carrying off statues -- some weighing hundreds of pounds -- from lawns across San Diego County, Calif., authorities say.

Many of the stolen sculptures are metal and may be targeted for scrap, Sgt. Christina Bavencoff of the Ramona Sheriff's Substation told the North County Times of Escondido.

At least 18 statues have been stolen in 13 thefts reported since Oct. 14, law enforcement records show. Their total estimated value is $43,820.

"If you have stuff outside, lock it down if you can, and if you see anything suspicious, let us know," Bavencoff warned. "If people do have artwork, it would be in their best interest to mark it somehow so if it is stolen, we can trace it."

She said no arrests have been made, and it is not known if the crimes are related.

The missing statues include two bronze horses in Solana Beach, two Buddhas in Vista, a bronze horse in Rancho Santa Fe, a life-sized copper statue of three children in Bonita and a 600-pound bronze moose and a life-sized aluminum colt, both in Ramona.

As scrap-metal prices have risen, authorities have been scrutinizing metal-recycling businesses.

Owner: 'Obama' gas stations to remain

DETROIT (UPI) -- The owner of three Detroit gas stations named after President Obama says he's sticking with the name despite growing criticism of rising gas prices.

Sam Bazzi said he changed the name of his stations to "Obama" out of respect for the president after his election, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported last week.

Two years on, amid a decline in the economy, Bazzi said he doesn't think Obama's name and face on his business has any negative impact.

His customers tend to agree, saying they don't blame the president for rising gas prices.

"No, I can't do that," customer Famous Ellis said. "He's doing everything he can to help us out."

Another customer said there are better ways to combat rising gas prices than just assigning blame.

"More than anything, we need to get those electric cars out here," Monte Harris said. "With that, we don't need to worry about gas that much."

Even if Obama isn't re-elected, Bazzi said, he wouldn't change the stations' names because the president has already brought him a lot of good will and because he's proud of him.

Va. police make 'Cokayne' drug bust

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Virginia police who arrested a man on suspicion of dealing drugs say it's just a coincidence the suspect's name is Kevin Lee Cokayne.

A search inventory of items confiscated in Cokayne's Fairfax County apartment lists a safe with marijuana, a wooden box with marijuana, two jars containing marijuana, a smoking device with marijuana, a digital scale, and "records and documents," The Washington Post reported Monday.

An undercover officer had previously asked Cokayne if he could search the apartment.

Cokayne refused.

"I don't see why you want to waste your time for an eighth of weed," he reportedly said. "It's a misdemeanor."

So police returned with a search warrant for the rented basement apartment.

Cokayne, 24, was charged with two felony counts of distributing marijuana.

Reporter closeted away during fundraiser

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Joe Biden apologized to a reporter who was stowed in a closet last week during a Democratic fundraiser.

"Scott: You have our sincere apologies for the lack of a better hold room today," ABC News reported Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander wrote to Orlando Sentinel reporter Scott Powers.

Scott told ABC Sunday he was escorted to a storage closet by a Biden staffer, preventing him from mingling with guests before Biden arrived. Scott was the designated pool reporter for the White House press corps at a fundraiser for Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., in a private residence.

"You're kidding me," Scott recalled telling the staffer when shown the door. Adding insult to injury, Biden didn't arrive until more than an hour later.

In her e-mail to Powers, Alexander said: "I am told, once the vice president and Senator Nelson arrived, the situation was quickly rectified -- and hopefully you weren't waiting too long."

Powers said he was held for more than an hour in the closet, allowed out for 35 minutes of remarks by Biden and Nelson, after which it was back into the closet until the vice president left.

Biden's office said it was policy that a print reporter cover the speaking program at fundraisers.

"At times, these fundraisers are at private homes and 'hold rooms' are provided for pool reporters to wait for the speaking program to commence. A hold room, however, should not be a storage room," the statement said. "This was the unfortunate mistake of an inexperienced staffer and the vice president's office has made sure it will never happen again."
