THE MARCH 11 ROUND-UP
» This Week: king tutAvailable now is the third issue in the Masterpieces of Arts-series to feature a pure gold insert with the actual artwork itself, after the Mona Lisa and Vitruvian Man issues in 2009 and 2010. This time the theme is Tutankhamun's death mask as found in his Egyptian tomb in 1922 by archeologists Howard Carter and George Herbert. This popular series of 3 ounce silver proof coins features beautiful pad color printing of classical masterpieces of art. The gold insert is surrounded by 26 inset Swarovski crystals, and is individually numbered on the back.

» This Week: brendanOn The Irish silver coin for Saint Brendan is expected to arrive next week. Designed by Michael Guilfoyle, who also designed the RSM logo and works on elements of our newsletters and web site design, the coin will be delivered from RSM with hand-signed certificates by the artist himself. There is no need to special order the signed certificates, as they will be provided exclusively for our customers.

» This Week: hellaOn March 19, Mint of Finland will issue a €10 silver proof coin honoring the 125th anniversary of writer, politician and businesswoman Hella Wuolijoki. This is the second in the Great Finnish Women coin series, which started in 2010 with the Minna Canth & Equality collector coin.

» This Week: It looks increasingly possible that Andorra will start issuing its own euros in 2013.
This article outlines a scenario - in Catalan - where (according to Google Translate) Andorra has to assume the monetary laws of the European Union by 2018. The introduction of Andorran euros in 2013 seems to be conditional on the assimilation of all EU directives on the prevention of fraud and forgery. In addition, 80% of the coins will have to be circulation coinage struck in agreement with the Spanish Mint and/or Monnaie de Paris, and 20% can be commemorative issues. It is not certain if both circulation and commemorative issues will be allowed in 2013.

» This Week: maltaOn This month, Malta will release a coin in both silver and gold versions in the eurostar program honoring European Explorers. The coin will honor the island's first settlers, the Phoenicians. Also, in September there will be a 2011-dated euro BU set issued, containg the standard eight denominations as well as a €2 commemorative coin and a coin replica medal. The commemorative € will be issued also as single items in both UNC and proof qualities, and is the first release in a 5-year series focusing on Malta's constitutional history.

» This Week: campoMonnaie de Paris has replaced its chief engraver's mint mark starting in 2011, as Yves Campo has replaced Hubert Larivière (2003-2010) in this position. The new mark depicts a pentagon surrounding the letters AG (Atelier de Gravure or engraving workshop) and MP (Monnaie de Paris et Pessac). The design is completed by Yves Sampo’s initials on either side of the pentagon.

» Earlier: herculesFollowing on the success of the Sower series of face value precious metal circulation coins started in 2008, Monnaie de Paris (French Mint) is continuing with a new theme and new denominations. The new theme is Herculaes, a famous character in French numismatic history, and the two denominations issued in 2011 is a €1,000 gold coin and a €100 silver coin. It is not known what future denominations will be issued, or how many total denominations there will be. The coins will be launched on June 14, and RSM will offer these item on a special order basis. If you are interested, please
email us and we will send you more information regarding prices and delivery.

» Earlier: Last year, the French Mint issued a 26-coin silver set for all of the French regions. This year, the 27th coin will be available to customers who purchased this series in 2010. The last coin features Mayotte, an overseas territory that is becoming a French region in April 2011. In September 2011, a second collection with 27 silver uncirculated coins - one each for the 22 regions and 5 overseas territories - and a new design focusing on architectural sites or natural wonders of each region will be issued. If you are interested in pre-ordering this collection, please
email us and we will send you more information.

» Earlier: cartierIssued on March 15, the annual French proof coin set will include the eurostar €10 silver proof coin "European Explorers: Jaques Cartier". Cartier was a French explorer of Breton origin who claimed what is now Canada for France. He was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence river, which he named "The Country of Canadas", after the Iroquois names for the two big settlements he saw at Stadacona (Quebec City) and at Hochelaga (Montreal Island). The issue limit for the 2011 proof set is 9,000 pcs.
