The Chinese internet is littered with the corpses of foreign firms that failed, but Groupon certainly has the war chest to give it a shot. This week I also authored an update on “China’s Top 4 Social Networks: RenRen, Qzone, Pengyou, and Kaixin001.” Competition is fierce in this fractured market, but we may see consolidation in the coming year, particularly if the struggling Kaixin001 is acquired or pushed out. The Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC) in Beijing on April 27-28 looks to be a must-attend conference. In addition to Chinese giants like Tencent CEO Pony Ma, they’ve also confirmed DST founder Yuri Milner, who dramatically shook up the Silicon Valley with his high-valuation investments in Facebook, Groupon, and Zynga. Also, the deadline for the GMIC G-startup competition (for mobile startups) has been extended to March 21, with prizes now confirmed from innovation Works, Chinaccelerator, and Plug and Play.
