Sports Update For Indiana Sunday March 13, 2011 | | Baseball Mets' Santana denies rehab is lagging PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (UPI) -- Injured New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana Sunday denied a report that his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery has hit a roadblock. Santana refuted the report in The (Bergen, N.J.) Record citing an unnamed source claiming the Mets were preparing to rule their ace hurler out for the year due to slow progress in his comeback from September surgery on his throwing shoulder. "Time will tell once I get on the mound," Santana told The New York Times at the Mets' spring training home of Port St. Lucie, Fla., without specifying when he hoped to return. Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said last month he expected Santana to return to the rotation in late June or July. But the Record's source indicated the lefty hasn't "been fluid" in recent workouts. Santana told reporters last week he was feeling good and was working out on his own at Port St. Lucie. Atlanta police spokesman Curtis Davenport said Powell, 28, was charged Saturday with obstruction, failure to obey an officer directing traffic and failure to yield to emergency equipment, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Powell was trying to turn onto a street, but got stuck in an intersection due to heavy traffic caused by the SEC basketball tournament. Powell's car impeded the ambulance's progress, the newspaper reported. "The officer approached Mr. Powell's vehicle and told him numerous times to go straight through the intersection ... . (He) refused and was placed under arrest," Davenport said. Powell, a seven-year NBA veteran who joined the Atlanta team last summer, was not in uniform following the incident during the Hawks game against the Portland Trail Blazers. Powell bonded out of jail. (UPI) -- Four Auburn University football players were charged with first-degree robbery for allegedly breaking into a home and stealing property, police said. Two of the players arrested for Friday's incident, Antonio Goodwin, 20, and Shaun Kitchens, 19, are from the Atlanta area, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday. Also charged were Michael McNeil, 22, and Harrison Mosley, 19, the newspaper said without specifying where they are from. "The players arrested in connection with this deeply troubling incident have been permanently dismissed from our football team. While we realize the legal process will run its course and these young men have a right for their case to be heard, playing for Auburn University is an honor and a privilege. It is not a right," Auburn Coach Gene Chizik said. Police said three men broke into a home while five residents were there. The residents said three men, one of whom carried a handgun, stole personal property. The trio allegedly got into a getaway car with a driver and drove away. Police halted the car, arrested the four, and recovered the stolen goods and a pistol, the newspaper said. The newspaper did not report what items were stolen. Mosley was released on bond after a court appearance. The newspaper said status reports on the other three would be unavailable until Monday. "This type of behavior will not be tolerated at Auburn. I fully support Coach Chizik's swift and decisive action to dismiss these four student-athletes from our football team effective immediately," said Jay Jacobs, Auburn's athletic director. Dustin Penner and Drew Doughty scored as the Kings improved to 3-0 on their current four-game road trip and vaulted over the Stars for the fourth seed in the Western Conference playoff standings. The Kings' Jonathan Quick stopped 21 shots, earning the win despite allowing Jamie Langenbrunner to tie the score only 22 seconds before Handzus' game-winner. Brad Richards also scored for the Stars, who came into the contest 6-0-2 in their previous eight games.
