Dog charity seeks to buy Vick home

SURRY, Va. (UPI) -- A non-profit group says it wants to purchase Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick's old home in Virginia and turn it into a haven for dogs.

Monica Severy, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, tells the Washington Post the 15-acre estate would be a place for rescue dogs to run free while at the same time being house-trained and socialized for eventual adoption.

Severy said she would leave the grim kennels that once housed fighting dogs in place as a memorial of sorts. "The dogs deserve for this to be seen," she said. "It's an important piece of history."

The Post said Sunday that Dogs Deserve Better has a ways to go before it raises the full sale price of nearly $600,000.

In addition, some neighbors in the rural area of Surry County are cool to the idea of a bunch of dogs roaming the area unsupervised. They told the Post they worried the animals might bite someone or get into territorial scrapes with the many hunting dogs that also have the run of the area.

"A lot of people think hunting dogs are only out during deer season, but a lot of people, like me, let our dogs out all the time," said Richie Clark, who lives next door to the old Vick place. "They get in the woods and run around."

Woodland's clutch putts win Transitions

TAMPA, Fla. (UPI) -- Gary Woodland drained two key putts late in the match Sunday, logging his first career PGA Tour victory at The Transitions Championship.

With the help of his clutch putts, Woodland (4-under-par 67) finished at 15-under 269, one stroke better than Webb Simpson (2-under 69).

Woodland was behind by one stroke after the 16th hole, but notched a birdie putt on the par-3 17th to forge a tie with Simpson. Then on the closing hole he saved par by rolling in an 11-footer.

Simpson's subsequent try for a birdie ran 20 feet by the stick and Woodland emerged with the victory.

Rookie Scott Stallings notched a 1-under 70 to take third at 12-under 272 and Brandt Snedeker (70) finished fourth at minus-11.

Third-round leader Justin Rose (74) stumbled into a fifth-place tie with Marc Turnesa (66), Martin Laird (70), Roland Thatcher (70), Chris Couch (71) and Brendon de Jonge (73) at 10-under 274.

NHL: New York Rangers 5, Pittsburgh 2

PITTSBURGH (UPI) -- Marian Gaborik and Ryan Callahan scored third-period, power-play goals Sunday, rallying the New York Rangers to a 5-2 victory over Pittsburgh.

The Penguins held a 2-1 lead midway through the final period, but Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke drew a 5-minute major and a game misconduct on a elbow delivered to Ryan McDonagh. Matt Niskanen was whistled for a high-sticking penalty 2 1/2 minutes later, putting Pittsburgh two men down.

The Rangers responded with goals by Gaborik and Callahan only 11 seconds apart, and New York went on to win its fourth straight and strengthen its hold on the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference.

Callahan added a pair of assists, Brandon Dubinsky contributed a goal and two helpers and Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 38-of-40 shots for the Rangers.

Artem Anisimov notched a goal and an assist and Derek Stepan also found the net for the Rangers.
