Thornton signs Chisox contract extension

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Matt Thornton has agreed to a two-year, $12 million contract extension, the team said Sunday.

The 34-year-old left-hander's deal includes a $6 million club option for a third year and will pay $5.5 million per season in 2012 and 2013, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Thornton, who made the American League All-Star team last season, is being eyed for the White Sox closer's slot although manager Ozzie Guillen has said he's leaning toward not having any assigned bullpen roles.

Over 410 career games with the Seattle Mariners and Chicago, Thornton has compiled a 26-23 record with a 3.68 earned run average and 436 strikeouts.

He posted a 5-4 record with a 2.67 ERA last season.

COL BKB: Ohio State 93, Wisconsin 65

COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI) -- Jon Diebler scored 27 points Sunday, propelling top-ranked Ohio State past No. 10 Wisconsin 93-65 in the regular-season finales for both teams.

Diebler made 7-of-8 three-pointers and Jared Sullinger ended with 22 points and seven rebounds for Ohio State (29-2, 16-2 Big Ten), which clinched the Big Ten championship outright.

The Buckeyes connected on 14-of-15 from beyond the arc while securing the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Josh Gasser fired in 17 points to lead the Badgers (23-7, 13-5).

Sabbatini holds off Yang in Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (UPI) -- Rory Sabbatini almost blew a big lead but managed to card an even-par 70 Sunday, holding off Y.E. Yang for The Honda Classic championship.

Sabbatini entered the final round with a five-stroke cushion. Yang, however, made a hard charge on the back nine, whittling Sabbatini's advantage to just one shot through 15 holes.

But the South African went on to claim his sixth career PGA title by birdying No. 16 and then hanging on to finish at 9-under-par 271, one shot better than Yang (4-under 66).

Jerry Kelly grabbed sole possession of third place, registering a 67 to end at 7-under 273.

Fourth place went to Ricky Barnes (67) at minus-four.

Hockey

NHL: New Jersey 3, N.Y. Islanders 2 (SO)

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (UPI) -- Brian Rolston's tally in the sixth round of a shootout Sunday boosted the New Jersey Devils to a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Rolston faked Islanders goalie Al Montoya to the ice, then lifted a wrist shot over the prone goaltender into the net, handing the surging Devils their fourth consecutive win.

Rolston also scored in regulation and Ilya Kovalchuk added a marker for New Jersey, which kept its faint Eastern Conference playoff hopes alive with its 20th win in 24 games overall since Jan. 9.

Martin Brodeur made five saves in the tiebreaker and stopped 20-of-22 shots for the game in the Devils' win.

Blake Comeau forced an overtime when he scored an unassisted goal with less than 4 minutes remaining for the Islanders.

Josh Bailey also found the net and Montoya made 27 saves in New York's loss.

Contador wins in 2nd race after doping ban

MURICA, Spain (UPI) -- Tour de France champion Alberto Contador Sunday logged a victory in his second race back after being cleared of a positive doping test.

Contador took the three-day Tour of Murcia, defending his lead from Saturday's mountain stage by also winning the 7.7-mile time trials in Murica, Spain.

He ended with best overall time of 9 hours, 27 minutes, 18 seconds, the BBC reported.

The Spaniard's win came in only his second event since he was banned and then cleared by the Spanish Cycling Federation after testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol.

Contador has said the positive test result -- which came days before he sealed last year's Tour de France triumph -- was due to eating contaminated meat.

The International Cycling Union is considering whether it will appeal the Spanish federation's decision, with a decision due March 24, the broadcaster said.

Chardy's win boosts France over Austria

VIENNA (UPI) -- Jeremy Chardy prevailed in a decisive fifth rubber Sunday, downing Martin Fischer to give France a 3-2 victory over Austria in first-round Davis Cup play.

Chardy's 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-3 victory over Fischer in the second reverse-singles match handed France a ticket to July's Davis Cup quarterfinals, where France will face Germany.

The little-known Fischer had replaced veteran Stefan Koubek in the fifth match after Austria forced a winner-take-all showdown with Jurgen Melzer's 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 come-from-behind victory over former top-10 French star Gilles Simon.

France, which improved to 8-0 all-time against Austria in Davis Cup competition, sported a 2-1 lead coming into the day after Austria's doubles win Saturday.
