Sports Update For Indiana Thursday March 10, 2011 | | Baseball Manuel agrees to extension with Phillies CLEARWATER, Fla. (UPI) -- Philadelphia Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel, who has guided the team to four consecutive division titles, has been given a two-year contract extension. The Phillies said Thursday that the new agreement will be in effect through the 2013 season. Financial terms weren't released but The Philadelphia Inquirer said the deal is worth $7 million to $8 million. Manuel has managed the Phillies since 2005, building a 544-428 record. Philadelphia has won National League East titles each season 2007-10, won the NL pennant twice and the World Series in 2008. The team last season was 97-65, which was the best record in the major leagues. "We are pleased to have come to terms with Charlie," Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro said in a statement. "He has been an integral part of the success we've had over the past several years. There was little doubt that he was going to continue to be our skipper past his current contract and we look forward to the next three years with the hopes of continued success." Manuel previously managed the Cleveland Indians in 2000-02, helping the Indians to a division title in 2001. His overall managerial record is 764-618. BYU (29-3) earned a tournament semifinal slot against the winner of a quarterfinal between Colorado State and New Mexico. TCU (11-22) was sent home. The Horned Frogs entered the game with 21 losses, including losing twice to BYU. The first time was a 16-point Cougars victory in Fort Worth, Texas, and the second BYU won at 23 at home. But TCU was even with BYU at 40-40 midway through the second half when Jackson Emery made a 3-point shot that put the Cougars ahead for good. Fredette had a 3-pointer with 1:41 to go that made the score 58-50 and Noah Hartstock had two free throws that made it a nine-point lead. But TCU's Greg Hill scored the next seven points -- hitting two 3-pointers and a free throw -- only to have Fredette and Jackson Emery seal the game with free throws. Fredette's 24 points came on 7-of-21 shooting and Charles Abouo added 14 and Hartstock 10 for BYU. Hill and Hank Thorn each had 5 points for TCU. Head football coach Bill Curry announced disciplinary actions against five Panther players, a school release said Thursday. Sophomore quarterback Drew Little has been suspended for spring practice and the first four games of the 2011 season, while sophomore safety Fred Barnes has been suspended for spring practice and the first two games, Curry said. Sophomore wide receiver Danny Williams and senior linebacker Evan Bostic have been suspended for the first week of spring practice, while senior linebacker Olufemi Opanubi has been dismissed from the team. Student privacy laws prohibit revealing the nature of the violations but none involved criminal activity, a school statement said. "As we build our program, discipline has to be the foundation," Curry said. "These situations are difficult for all involved, but we will do the right thing, for Georgia State football and for these young men." Sophomore Bo Schlechter will return to quarterback, joining sophomore Kelton Hill at the position when the Panthers open spring practice March 21, Curry said. In a release, the director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions called for the police probe after the National Hockey League said it found no harmful intent in Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara's check that slammed Montreal forward Max Pacioretty's head and neck into a pole supporting safety glass. Pacioretty was still in hospital Thursday with a fractured neck vertebra and a severe concussion, The (Montreal) Gazette reported. Montreal Police issued a statement confirming they had been asked to investigate, but said nothing more, the newspaper said. Chara received a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit, as he and Pacioretty weren't near the puck. At least two hockey players in Quebec have faced criminal charges of assault following incidents on the ice since 2008, the Gazette said.
