(UPI) -- LSU women's basketball Coach Van Chancellor has stepped down after four seasons, the school said Wednesday. Chancellor, 67, will become special assistant to Athletic Director Joe Alleva. The Lady Tigers were 90-40 under Chancellor, including 19-13 overall and 8-8 in the SEC this past season, but missed the NCAA Tournament. LSU will begin searching for a new coach right away, though Alleva said many candidates are coaching in the tournament. "I have a handful of people in mind," he said. "My time table is to get the best person no matter how long it takes. "This is a decision we made that's in the best interest of the program." Besides taking LSU to the Final Four once in his four years, Chancellor coached the U.S. Women's Olympic Team to a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Games. He has also coached at Ole Miss and in the WNBA with the Houston Comets. Chancellor said he was most proud of running a program free of NCAA infractions and that every senior who played for him graduated. "I've never had one piece of publicity that our players have been in trouble," he said. "It's been a wonderful, wonderful four years. It's a wonderful place to be." The league cracked down on such hits last season by assessing hefty fines on several players but stopped short of issuing suspensions. Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, said that will change when the NFL resumes play, The Washington Post reported. "We need to continue in terms of disciplining repeat offenders and flagrant violators. … When warranted, suspension will be an effective discipline for us," Anderson said. The NFL also announced other rule changes meant to protect quarterbacks and receivers making catches. Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay said a receiver will be considered a protected "defenseless" player until "he can clearly protect himself or becomes a runner." Rules covering kickoffs were also changed to prevent defenders from getting more than a 5-yard running start before the kick, with touchbacks now coming out to the 20 rather than 25 yard line, the Post reported. (UPI) -- The NHL will institute a beefed-up concussion protocol starting immediately, league general managers said Wednesday. Under the new procedures, a player exhibiting concussion symptoms after a hit will be removed from the bench to be tested for 15 minutes in a quiet area away from the ice, NHL.com reported. The protocol will be in effect starting with Wednesday night's games, said GMs attending league meetings in Boca Raton, Fla. The new rules remove an element of choice from players, who now will be forced to leave the ice to be tested no matter the game situation if they show such symptoms as loss of consciousness, motor incoordination or balance problems. "That's a huge change," Nashville GM David Poile told NHL.com. "It's a very caring change to make sure we're right. It's the game of hockey, it's going to be physical. As the caretakers we're going to do everything possible to make it as safe as possible, but there are still going to be injuries." The new protocol was instituted after a rash of concussions this season, including one sustained by Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby, who has been out since early January. The logo looks much like the current Pac-10 insignia and will be put into effect July 1 when Utah and Colorado officially become members. The video is set to techno-pop music and features a montage of buoyant students decked out in jerseys, caps and other gear from their individual schools. "We wanted to do something creative that allowed some of our student-athletes and fans to give the new logo life," conference Chief Marketing Officer Danette Leighton said in a written statement. "We also wanted to reflect the enthusiasm that all of our institutions have for the Pac-12 becoming a reality this summer." Leighton said the use of YouTube as a platform for the announcement was an easy one since college students and fans tend to be very active in social media.
